So genuine are the paintings of narrator Julie, her big sister, Tara, and her younger autistic brother, Ian, that the three children look as though they will continue walking, tying a shoe, or feeding the ducks just as soon as the page is turned. As Tara and Julie take Ian along on their walk to the park, Julie describes how Ian acts differently from most people, showing no interest, for example, in the food or customers in Nan's diner and paying attention only to the rotating ceiling fan. Admirably patient with Ian, Julie nevertheless grows angry with his seemingly stubborn ways. Yet her close observations of her brother serve her well when Ian wanders away. By thinking of what Ian likes to do, Julie finds her brother and ushers him home again. Through its simple plot, the story conveys a complex family relationship and demonstrates the ambivalent emotions Julie feels about her autistic brother. This natural mix of resentment, anger, isolation, loyalty, and love is explained in preliminary notes written by professional pediatric caregivers. Sensitizing readers to these dynamics as well as to the autistic condition, this book offers a valuable, warmly told lesson. Ellen Mandel

A book for half the population,,

This is a well-written book. It's unfortunate that the sub-title is "A Story about Autism." A more accurate title would be "One boy's story of austism." Approximately fifty percent of autistic children are non-verbal. This is a story for children affected by that half of the autistic population. For those of us who are not, this book is not helpful at all. I am the mother of an autistic son, and my other children need to read a story that addresses echolalia, perseveration, and obsessive-compulsive speech patterns. These are very REAL very FRUSTRATING aspects of autism that thousands of us deal with on a daily basis.

A Sweet Testimony To The Love of Family,

About two months ago my youngest child Matthew was diagnosed as autistic. Amidst a whirlwind of therapy sessions and paperwork I've tried to find books or some type of resource that would help him and his six year old brother Jordan understand what was going on. "Ian's Walk" does just that. It presents the world of autism to the listener in an easy-to-understand manner and the gentle illustrations emphasize the book's message. It held Jordan's attention from beginning to end and I could see so much of Matthew throughout the story. "Ian's Walk" is a must-have to anyone who has been blessed with an autistic child or knows someone who has. It definitely brings home the message that "while life isn't always perfect, it is still good."

An excellently illustrated and touching story,

The illustrations are superb. With only the slightest variation, I can see my son in nearly every one of Karen Ritz's illustrations. My entire family read this book and cried. We have been there too (having momentarily lost my autistic son at the soccer fields before). But, best of all, it gave me the opportunity to thank my two older children for their loving patience with their autistic younger brother.
