From Library Journal
The realm designated by the title is psychological: through the course of this brief and finely written narrative, the reader is carried along the stream of consciousness of a sensitive and astutely observing young woman who has loved her father and outlived him. A critic, professor of literature, and prominent feminist as well as a writer, Cixous is hardly known by American readers, but this careful translation of her 1969 award-winning novel serves as an excellent introduction for readers interested in modern European fiction from Joyce to Duras. Unlike Duras's heroines, Cixous's contains the tale within her psychical being rather than acting out a part in the events around her. Highly recommended for serious fiction collections and scholars of feminist psychology. Francisca Goldsmith, M.L.S., IFCorp., Piedmont, Cal.
