Grade 2-4-Plans frequently go awry, but for Kayla, the young British schoolgirl with innumerable schemes, almost none of them reach fruition in this chapter book by Anne Adeney (Orion, 1998). Kayla's asthmatic mother, Beatrice, is the live-in housekeeper for crabby Mrs. Blower who has grudgingly allowed the child to stay in her house on the condition that she is never heard. This arrangement ends in disaster when Kayla hatches a plan to teach the bullfrogs she has borrowed and brought home to croak happy birthday to her teacher for her next science project. When she tries to make them practice in the kitchen, they start hopping around, smashing fragile bone china. Mrs. Blower fires Kayla's mother. The pair are forced to live in a room in a damp, musty basement where Beatrice develops pneumonia and is faced with a lengthy convalescence. Beatrice contacts Kayla's father, who agrees to take the child he never knew about. Kayla has mixed feelings about going to her father's home until she concocts a plan to make her father fall in love with her mother all over again. However, her dad already has a wife. While she makes other plans that are destined to fail, in the process she learns a lot about herself and relationships. Comedienne/actress Helen Lederer narrates with understanding and humor. She does especially well with voice variations for the many eccentric minor characters. The accent and idioms of this British offering will not hinder American youngsters. The delicate handling of modern family situations and the compassionate portrayal of a young girl emerging from childhood and learning to distinguish reality from fantasy make this a healthy treat for library shelves after the staples have been purchased.
