Dr. Starr has written a clear and understandable explanation of why so many people today are suffering from hypothyroidism, despite 'normal' blood tests that throw their doctors off the track. This book is a compilation of the overwhelming evidence that not only is the modern laboratory testing used to diagnose hypothyroidism completely inadequate, but also the current treatment for the illness is equally lacking efficacy.

Thyroid epidemic revealed.... PLEASE give this book to all your doctors!! 16. Oktober 2006
Von J. Akaha - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I have a family history of thyroid disease including both Hashimoto and Graves Disease. I took radioactive iodine for Graves disease 19 years ago, and have been on synthetic thyroid for many years. (Now supplemented with T3 dessicated thyroid hormone).

When my kids started experiencing severe medical problems we went to psychiatrists, endocrinologists and even a homeopath in search of answers. Their illnesses were described as non-specific depression, immune disorder, adrenal fatigue, etc.

I finally found a terrific internist who understood natural hormone balancing and who also shared Dr. Starr's belief that thyroid disorder has reached epidemic proportions, particularly among women. She immedietely started treating my daughter with thyroid hormone, but ignored thyroid disorder as a possible cause of my son's problems. It was this doctor who actually suggested that I read this book, and she gave a copy of this book to my son's psychiatrist as well. The psychiatrist had diagnosed my son with adrenal fatigue and was treating him with hydrocordisone and lexapro. He seemed to be improving, but he still was not ready to return to college this fall due to severe insomnia, inability to wake up, inability to deal with stress (adrenal fatigue) and fuzzy thinking.

Our last appointment was two days ago and the doctor had not only read the book, but had contacted Dr. Hertoghe in order to make sure that he knew exactly how to test patients. In a very short time was able to integrate all of Dr. Starr's ideas into his understanding of how our bodies work, and more importantly for us, saw my son's problems in a totally new way which I believe will be a breakthough in his long illness. Armed with this new knowledge, he was able to explain to us that my son's low basal temperature (it was 95.6 underarm mid afternoon and 3 degrees higher orally) was way too low for him to wake up in the morning. It had also been overlooked on earlier labs that his T3 was below range because his T4 was within range.

Clearly, we were very lucky to find an extraordinary doctor who isn't afraid to embrace new ideas. If everyone who reads this book gives this book to just one doctor, maybe we can make mainstream medicine take notice!

You will be mad as Hell (when you read this book)!! 10. Juni 2006
Von James T. Webber, MD - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Dr. Starr returns to the essence of medicine: Listening to what the patient has to say and looking at the patient and finding evidence to make the diagnosis. He pays great homage to the early pioneers in thyroidology, referencing their publications and insights, and provides photographs clearly showing the physical consequences when thyroid hormones, despite "normal" laboratory tests, are not working. At last, someone has stepped up to the plate and decried the medical profession's reliance, no, blind faith, in third-party medicine (blood, spit, urine lab tests). Skepticism helped medicine leap forward centuries ago. Dr. Staar's excellent book brings it on. After reading this book, you will know, you, or someone dear to you, will have some expression of hypothyroidism type 2 (thyroid hormone resistance syndrome). His book will empower you to seek, no, insist, on getting the proper treatment. Dr. Staar's assessment that this is an epidemic is true. This is a must-read for all healthcare professionals.

for anyone with chronic health problems! 9. Oktober 2008
Von D&D - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
[P.S. There is a revised 2103 edition available for $9.99 (as PDF, Kindle and Nook) from newvoice[dot]net
and in 2014 Starr published a shorter kindle book "How to Prevent Heart Attacks, Heart Failure, and Diabetes" (all are linked to underactive thyroid)]

"Type 2" means all those thyroid problems for which there are no lab tests, which means they don't get diagnosed.

This book shows how much of poor health and all chronic pain is linked to often unsuspected low thyroid, including those involved with diabetes, heart problems, both bleeding (like gums, periods) & blood clots (including strokes) and some cancers. It is one of my two top reads for those who have (or suspect) low thyroid. If you have any kind of chronic pain, you need to know 1. some are calling low thyroid the silent epidemic (silent because officially denied) that affects between 40% and 60% of the population and2. there are no lab tests for most causes of low thyroid (mainstream doctors treat lab tests, not you, so you will be left in suffering and pain and, if you complain long enough, will be told it's all in your head - NO, it's in THEIR heads).

I've read hundreds of books on health including well over a dozen books on thyroid. Too many contain mostly regurgitated conventional beliefs, a few were written mainly to sell the author's own nutrition products. Most insist thyroid medical tests are reliable. (How do they know this, anyway?)

This one is different. The author is a hypothyroid specialist and provides much evidence that over 50% of us have low thyroid problems - whether your own doctor's much-touted tests show it or not. This is the book that really helped me understand my low thyroid problems and I have also learned how to see the signs in others (from pix and explanations in the book of things like the arm pinch test and swollen necks).

The only negative for me is that it did not really agree with the warning in other excellent thyroid book about adrenal fatigue preventing recovery (the most practical of these 2 books, a how-to manual for both low thyroid and for adrenal issues - is listed below). The adrenal involvement is a major problem because, even if you are able to get thyroid supplements, they may not work (especially if you take synthetic thyroid) and you would then assume you don't have a low thyroid problem, that it must be something else. This happened to me at the start of my long illness and was one of the major reasons - in addition to being assured by doctors that their lab tests "proved" there was nothing wrong with me - that I did not consider low thyroid again for over a decade.

So, over more than 2 decades, I very gradually got worse and worse in health. I first read this as a published paper book years ago, when I was far less informed about low thyroid problems, although I had read most of the books available then. I gave it 5 stars then and would give it 10 now, if I could. [another later note: I have the paper copy of this book as well as this kindle version [later note: I also got the "revised 2013 edition" e-book] and make it a point to re-read the latest version when traveling. Every time I re-read it, I pick up something else relevant to my specific condition.]

Now - FINALLY - after over 20 years of low thyroid problems - undiagnosed and untreated by both generalist doctors and endo specialists - I consulted a Broda Barnes trained thyroid doctor and finally obtained a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. I still have a long way to go (mine is advanced, partly due to how long I have been left without treatment) but I am so much better now.

The author provides photos (some very old, unfortunately, but still informative) enabling anyone who studies them to identify low thyroid people at a glance. I can do that now - it's more obvious in those aged over 40 or 50 and in any room crowded with an older group, I can spot that over 80% exhibit what I call the "thyroid throat" - did you know there are NO fat cells in the throat? If your throat is swollen (example: double chin) or your neck has thickened, YOU HAVE LOW THYROID! I've been correct every single time that I have had the chance to follow up. Fortunately, you don't need to learn how to do this, there is a simple home self-test.

My other top pick is "Stop The Thyroid Madness" (STTM): I think this is the MOST important book and there is also a very helpful website with the same name; both are patient-empowering. The book is detailed and basically a practical manual for low thyroid and also adrenal insufficiency, which is common in low thyroid people.

Body temperature is crucial for evaluating your health. Both STTM website and book explain a quick and easy home test for identifying low thyroid in yourself, the FREE basal (at rest) temperature self-test, which is THE gold standard for low thyroid problems and - with your symptoms - means more than any lab test (although most conventional doctors, including endos, won't agree but then they're not trained to understand thyroid problems - go to the Broda Barnes foundation website and click on the "Educational Info" button on the left for how to get a list of these doctors in your state. The basal temperature home self-test will pick up conditions that current lab tests don't, such as thyroid resistance.

The stopthethyroidmadness website has excellent instructions for this self-test, as well as several for adrenal fatigue, which often goes hand-in-hand with low thyroid. The two most common health problems worldwide, they're rarely diagnosed or treated.

Latest note: It's also worth knowing about "The Calcium Lie II" an intriguing book plausibly claiming to explain the root cause of most illnesses.

Right on Target 2. August 2005
Von shoey - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I have traveled from Florida to see Dr. Starr and will continue to do so because he is right on target with my diagnosis and treatment. His book shows how this problem is an epidemic and is being totally ignored. When blood tests actually do show a problem it is being ineffectively treated, which I can attest to. Now that I understand the issues I can better deal with my health problems that grow less and less each day. I've sent my mother and my sister to see Dr. Starr. His claim that this disease runs in families is true in my case as well. I'm the fourth generation with thyroid problems. I finally feel as if I have found a health practitioner that truly understands my problems.

If anyone has any doubt that hypothyroidism is not an epidemic, or you want to convince your doctor to listen to you, please run out and buy this book. It will make you understand the issues and the interactions with heart disease, diabetes, obesity and many others.

review of "Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic" 23. September 2009
Von Edward R. Arnold - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
As anyone knows who has used endocrinologists, it is totally frustrating to be treated by a doctor who treats lab tests, rather than symptoms. Mark Starr is a doctor who treats symptoms, and who is willing to use thyroid-suppressive therapies to get rid of all symptoms, so this puts him ahead of the pack. His description of thyroid resistance and its genetic under-pinnings is really helpful.

However, I rate this book only 3 stars. I do this because Starr's account is incomplete. He completely fails to acknowledge the existence of rT3 (reverse T3, or DT3, the mirror image of LT3, which is the desirable left-hand form) and the use of the FT3/rT3 ratio as a diagnostic measure. As a survivor of celiac disease who understands how the deranged biochemistry of Celiac-Sprue can force the body into making excess rT3, I know why it is important for some patients to have combination T3+T4 therapy, or even T3-only therapy, which Starr does not do. I have closely followed the thought of John C. Lowe DC on the benefits of T3 therapy, as well as the thought of alternative practitioners like Kent Holtorf MD, who frequently uses time-release T3 on his patients. Starr appears to be unaware of the trends in treatment initiated by practitioners such as Lowe and Holtorf.
