4.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of fun 11. September 2013

Format:Kindle Edition
From being 19 and madly in love with up and coming artist husband and living the artist's life in London, Ella is now thirty-something and somewhat disillusioned after ten years living on a ramshackle farm with delinquent hens, lazy children, an eccentric aunt-in-law and separated in everything but actual distance from husband Sebastian who lives literally next door in what was the old granary.
Catherine Alliott's characters are, as always, larger than life and full of character and there are many puns and much witty repartee; plenty of crossed wires, mishaps and incidents to keep the reader engrossed in this novel and turning the pages to find out why Ella and Sebastian are not together in any sense that matters.
Personally, I flew through this book. It was everything I have come to expect from Catherine Alliott and she has never disappointed me. I love her scatterbrained and snobby characters alike; her depictions of rural life - knee deep in chicken poo and leaking roof tiles make me laugh. I may not have had much sympathy with Ella and Sebastian's dilemma but I would certainly have liked Ella as a friend; in fact I think Alliott's novels have the knack of making you believe you are among friends - caricatured and eccentric maybe but they lend a certain escapism to her novels and give me hours of light hearted pleasure and laughter and this latest novel is a winner in that it does exactly that - the only downside is that I wish I could have remained with them a little longer.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Deeply complex novel 13. August 2013

A little slow to get into, but once you're there you're hooked and deeply invested in the characters, even the unpleasant ones! Catherine Alliott creates a world that is true to life in the country, horny cockerels and all, and her depiction of human nature is hauntingly honest; be prepared to learn a little about yourself and a lot about love and marriage in the modern world.

The dialogue is creative and Alliott is clearly a woman with an expansive vocabulary and a wonderful sense of humour, yet she has carefully added this to different characters, ensuring that they are all individuals and not just a part of herself. The issue of finding a balance between a career and creating something you love is always present and is combined with the need to find a balance between being honest with yourself and getting caught up in your own denial. This is a deeply complex novel that will (corny as it might sound) take you on a voyage of self discovery, but leave you at the end totally satisfied by Ella's own voyage.

Catherine Alliott is my favorite English romance author! She has humor, style and substance and her characters are wonderfully developed and full. It is such fun to read about England and the way they live and act is sort of the same but not. Her books are a great read and I recommend her highly!

At first glance, Ella Montclair lives a normal life with a husband, Sebastian, and two children on their farm, long married parents in town, and an overbearing sister with a family of her own also in town. Upon closer examination though, Ella's life is anything but typical. Her husband has lived in one of the outbuildings on the farm for years, with the children visiting him on occasion from the house they share with Ella, Sebastian's elderly aunt lives in another one, and once Ella's mother announces that she's coming to live as well, Ella wonders what part of her life is left for herself. Ella also wonders what the state of her marriage is and whether her and Sebastian share any remaining commitment to each other once the handsome gardener, Ludo and her share a mutual attraction and special friendship.

This was a wonderful book, as are all the Catherine Alliott novels I've read have been. While funny and lighthearted, the book also shares some powerful family themes such as how people grow and change in marriages, the right amount to push children to achieve while still allowing them to remain themselves, and the fine lines that exist for each person's morality. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good chick lit book but with a little more meat and substance. I couldn't put it down.
