Kurzbeschreibung

Jesse Sampson and her two younger sisters have lived a hard life on the streets of Seattle, Washington for the past several years. Four years before the Earth received its first visitors from space causing mass fear. Alone in a world gone mad with just her sisters, Jesse has learned to use the darkness and the remains of the city to survive and keep what was left of her family alive. She has seen the savage side of human nature and finds they are not much different from the aliens who conquered the Earth.
The Trivators have taken control of the Earth to prevent the humans from destroying it in their fear. A world of warriors, they are sent out by the Alliance of Star Systems to seek out new worlds. Their mission is first contact. They are to establish communication with the leaders of the new worlds they find and bring them into the Alliance. Any resistance is to be quickly subdued to prevent unnecessary death of the inhabitants of the new worlds they find. Their payment comes from the success of their mission.
Hunter is what he is called. A hunter, one of the elite clans of the Trivators who seek out those who resist. His abilities to track, capture and eliminate those who try to harm any warrior is renowned. He finds the tables turned when he becomes the one captured by a group of ruthless humans.
Hunter is shocked when a strange human female risks her life to help him escape only to disappear into the ruins of the city. He now has a new mission, finding the female who saved his life. He is determined to find her before she is damaged by others of her kind.
What he finds is a reward beyond comprehension to a Trivator warrior, a family. Can he convince Jesse that he can give her and her younger sisters a better life on his world? Or will fear keep her from accepting what he has to offer?

SciFi-Liebesroman 26. Januar 2014
Von C. Arndt
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

3 1/2 Stars for Hunter's Claim

*****some spoilers in this review*****

Hunter's Claim seemed very different to me than the other books that I have read that were written by Ms. Smith. Initially, I LOVED the story but as it progressed I ended up just liking it. I probably won't read it again, but you never know I suppose.

The story is about an earth girl, Jesse, and an alien man named Hunter. It begins in a post-apocalyptic type of setting on Earth in which our h is trying to survive with her two younger sisters. The setting and situation on Earth was written extremely well. I could easily picture what was going on and the story INSTANTLY grabbed my attention. I read this part voraciously. Jesse had to sneak around trying to scavenge food up for herself and her sisters. She had become very good at hiding - which is what she was doing when a group of rebels drove a van into the building she was hiding in. The rebels had apparently caught an alien and were planning on torturing him to death. When Jesse hears the rebels discussing their plans for the alien, she realizes she can't leave him to die that way and decides to help him escape even though she would put herself in great danger. She is able to unlock the alien's (Hunter) chains and then slips stealthily away while he is fighting the rebels. Hunter and two other alien warriors track Jesse and soon find her and her sisters who are living in deplorable conditions. Jesse and her sister Jordan are gravely ill and require immediate medical help. When Jesse awakens she learns that in order for Hunter to bring them into the warrior camp he had to claim Jesse as his "amate" or in essence "marry" her. Jesse, of course, didn't like that idea and so she and her sisters escape.

At this point, I was seriously thinking this was one of the best books Ms. Smith has given us thus far even though I really prefer the way the H's in her other books instantly recognize their mate and react so fiercely to them. I love how normally Ms. Smith's H's are so instantly possessive and fixated on their mates. (I love it even more when the h resists the H's claim. That can be very entertaining.) That was not the case here. Hunter having to marry Jesse so he could bring her into the camp was a letdown for me and it came across as though he "settled" for he. He "married" her because circumstances forced him to do so and not because he wanted her/loved her/needed her and couldn't live without her. I really didn't like that part.

However, the story in the first part of this book was so well done that I was hopeful that I would be able to overcome that disappointment. After the girls ran away from the warrior's camp, Hunter and his friends tracked them down, rescued them from another bad situation and then took them aboard a ship headed to their home world. It was at this point the story started to lag and my initial interest began to wane.

You see, while Ms. Smith allows Hunter and Jesse time to know each other aboard the ship, which I appreciate very much, their relationship really lacked any tension. This lack of tension, made their relationship, (dare I say it?), boring at times. While I really appreciate Ms. Smith's writing style, imaginative world building and story telling ability, I read her books for the romance. Romance, to me does equal relationship building, which is here, AND tension, sparks, and chemistry between the primary characters. I really feel that was greatly lacking here. Jesse just accepts Hunter's Claim. There are no arguments, no bantering, no cat/mouse games and I really missed that. I believed Hunter loved Jesse and I believed in their relationship BUT it wasn't exciting to read about. It was just kinda there....

I also felt that Hunter was not up to Ms. Smith's previous H's. He seemed pretty weak as a H to me. Previous books by Ms. Smith have the H fixated on the h and they had the "mine" mentality. They were super possessive OTT alpha males. Hunter does not come across that way at all. I REALLY hope that in future books Ms. Smith H's are stronger, more possessive, alpha males like in her previous books. I also really missed the delightful spunky h's that she has given us in the past. Jesse is likeable, strong and courageous but she wasn't spunky or feisty. Again, I missed this BUT had the H been stronger I would've overlooked it.

The second half of the book was not as fleshed out as the first. A lot of the story felt rushed/glossed over. Frequently, things were mentioned but not explained in detail. There were big lags in time where months go by and we just get a summary of the events rather than reading the story. I'm good with this in an epilogue or a few times during the story if it's necessary to help the story move along. I didn't like how this occurred so frequently in the second half.

Overall, I loved the idea of the story more than the execution. I still did like the story and we get a HEA but I found the romance to be somewhat lacking/kinda boring (not referring to sex here but the actual romance). If you enjoy sci-fi love stories and you aren't looking for a hot romance, you might really enjoy this because even on her worst day Ms. Smith is still a good author with great stories to tell.

I'm shocked and puzzled that this book has so many five star ratings. At this point I've only read two chapters, but the quality of writing has so irritated me, I'm not sure I'll be able to finish. There is always a risk when purchasing an independently published book, but this one had so many five stars, I took a chance. These reviewers must be quite young, or S. E. Smith has a lot of family members.

Sentence structure is appalling. One sentence can go from past to present to future tense in less than twelve words. The author doesn't have a clue what show vs tell means. Plotting is horrible. First chapter is from heroine's POV, second is from hero's. Nothing wrong with that except some paragraphs are lifted verbatim. Repetitious isn't even a strong enough word.

The story idea really interested me. I was looking forward to reading this. A writer who knew what she was doing could have really taken this and ran with it. A shame that didn't happen.

I'm going back to read more. Hopefully, it'll picked up. Unfortunately, I'm not optimistic.

Ok, I'm into chapter six now. Sadly, the quality of writing hasn't improved much, but story is fairly interesting. However, the following sentence threw me for a loop:

'It was a long time since he'd relieved himself with a living female, and Jesse's scent was driving him nuts.'

<eyebrows climb up forehead> Please tell me that doesn't mean what I think it does. <Back to read more>. Alright, there's something about they 'seek relief in a relief room'. See what I mean about repetitious, but anyway I have a mental image of a sperm donation clinic which in itself is a bit gross, but world's away from what I first thought. Maybe it's just me with a dirty mind, but that's just another example of bad writing when an author doesn't make herself clear. This is beginning to sound like poorly written fanfiction. If it is, it's giving fanfiction a bad name.

I'm deeply sorry, but I give up. When an alien male says he has to take a shower to quench his desire, that's enough for me. Where did he grow up? Milwaukee? Obviously, no sense of alien culture here. Total waste of $3.99. That'll teach me to get a sample from now on, and I'll always read the one star and two star reviews first before buying.

S.E. Smith, my constructive advice is to please take some creative writing and grammar courses, and get an editor who can sharpen up your work for you. You have good ideas, but writing is a skill that needs to be developed. Best wishes for your future work.

I bought this book because it had a good number of high-star reviews but I feel as if I've been bamboozled. This book was quite lacking in many respects.

It reads like many of its counterparts in the genre: delicate yet feisty female meets hyper masculine male and manages to bring him to his knees almost instantaneously. The chemistry is immediate and love is in the air almost as fast as the panties come off.

There are the usual problems with grammar and syntax. There was very little world-building. The main love story was not very believable. I had a hard time accepting that a young Earth woman could so quickly fall for and mate with an invading alien warrior. I'm all for open-mindedness when it comes to relationships but this seemed a bit of a stretch.

I should know better than to expect much out of these books but apparently hope springs eternal. I'm all for a light sexy read, but this one felt particularly generic.

5.0 von 5 Sternen So glad this is a series 13. Januar 2014

This was a great first book in a new series from S.E. Smith. As in all her books, the author introduced us to a new world that makes you wish planetary travel was possible) and that big hunky romantic alpha warriors really exist.
Although I don't love books depicting the destruction of earth and it's self inflicted Armageddon it was necessary to the storyline.
I read this book in one sitting and was immediately drawn into the characters and storyline. It was refreshing to see the hero and heroine be able to come together rather early in the story. This enables us to grow with them as their bond strengthens and enables them to fight the battles to come. It is too often we read about mated couples taking up much of the book with denying the feelings for each other.
Hunter's Claim centered around more than the main couple. I loved that in addition to the love and romance, the was a strong emphasis of loyalty, commitment, and caring that extended to family and friends.
There was a lot of romantic hot scenes, exciting and nail biting scenes as well as the adventure of coming to live on an alien planet. Jesse and Hunter's families and friends were all great secondary characters that provided a nice amount of humor , drama and depth to the storyline. I can't wait to read about them in upcoming books.

I'm a fan of Susan's and love her books however this one just didn't do it for me. Hunter, one of the elite clans of the Trivators, is just too sweet in his role as an alien invader while Jesse wasn't as bad ass as I thought. The plot and sub plots were well written and added a lot to this book but the different scenes were just too compact and superficial.

What I wouldn't give to have been able to give this book five stars as I love so many of this author's work.
