Twenty-seven-year-old Frannie Hunter is still living with her parents, working the late shift as a waitress at a local restaurant. Her overachieving sister has recently been hospitalized with an eating disorder, and Frannie herself is obsessed with food and her fluctuating weight. When her sister commits suicide, Frannie is shocked out of her lethargy and slowly starts to build a life for herself. If it's possible to carry off a novel on the strength of the heroine's voice alone, then that's precisely what first-novelist Medoff has done. Rising above the amorphous plot and erratic pacing is Frannie's rude and funny voice and her graphic talk about food and sex. Including both painful scenes with Frannie's sister in the hospital and hilarious conversations with best friend Abbie about men and money, this novel is refreshingly candid, but it lacks the focus that would have taken it to a deeper level. I loved this book and I thought the characters were very believable and true to life. I would love to read more from this author. There are way too many fiction books out there that have unrealistic situations:ie:everyone is rich, famous, stalked, murdered, etc. I don't read much fiction but when I do I love a realistic book like this. I liked Frannie (she reminded me of Monica Lewinsky!) I would recommend this book to any woman.

"Part I" of this book felt forced and contrived. I was rolling my eyes as I read through the cliches and corny phrases that real people do not actually use. Another annoying habit of the author is the unbelievable amount of cursing in this book--practically every character says the f-word every couple of pages! However, I felt that Part II of the book made up for the awkward beginning. Without giving the plot away, I will state that the author provides a unique perspective on anorexia--particularly with respect to how friends and families are touched by the individual sufferer. Some sections from the second-half are amazing and incredibly well-written. As I was reading, I felt that only someone who has intimately experienced disordered eating could express and convey such complicated issues, and my hunch was confirmed when I later read that Medoff herself once endured and then conquered her eating disorder.

There are so many books written on those who suffer with eating disorders, but few that put the family's suffering into such eloquent words. This is a great book for anyone who buys into the misconception that her/his eating disorder only ruins her/his own life; it deeply affects the lives of all those you come in contact with.

Captivated the full spectrum of emotions
