Kurzbeschreibung

An examination of the unique parallels between New York City’s evolution and that of the New York Yankees, How the Yankees Explain New York illustrates how the storied history of the Bronx Bombers mirrors that of the Big Apple itself. The oldest professional sports franchise in the city, the Yankees have played in front of sold out crowds in the Bronx for nearly a century, and this work explores the relationship between Wall Street high-rollers and the Yankees’ record-setting payroll, describes the “city that never sleeps” through the nighttime antics of Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin, revisits the healing effect of the Yankees’ World Series run in the aftermath of 9/11, and much more. Entertaining and insightful, this book is sure to be popular amongst one of sports’ most passionate fan bases.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Did it hurt when Mariano Rivera gave birth to the universe? 6. März 2014
Von Timothy P. Donnelly - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Truth be told, our cultural obsession with professional sports is anathema to me. HOWEVER... as a social studies teacher, I recognize and appreciate the inextricable link between the history of baseball and the history of our nation. Thanks to this outstanding book, I now recognize and appreciate the marrow-deep connection between New York City and the Yankees. "How the Yankees Explain New York" is a quick, coherent, balanced, fascinating read; filled with lots of great history, analysis, anecdotes, and quotes (the Mets fan's quip about the universe crawling out of Mariano Rivera's anus is priceless!). Whether you're a sports fan, history buff, or lover of New York City, there's plenty in this book that will appeal to you. Highly recommended!
5.0 von 5 Sternen A Masterpiece... Brilliant work. 12. März 2014

Donnelly's book on the 1995 ALDS was terrific but this is better. It brilliantly covers the fascinating nuances of the love affair between THE City and it's baseball team. The most successful franchise in sports history deserves the tribute that this book provides. The book reads easily, while still providing many facts and anecdotes that the most ardent fans will find enlightening. A must read for any Yankees fan or baseball fan.

Donnelly does it again! This mix of history, anecdote and lore makes this a great read, even for non-baseball fans and more importantly, non-Yankee fans! I didn't have an issue with Donnelly's supposed politics. I didn't even notice a bend left or right. In fact, I found his narrative carefully balanced. A great summertime read.

Great book for Yankee fans and NYC lovers. The author's knowledge of both the Yankees and New York City is extensive and accurate; the parallels between the team and city are very interesting. Donnelly's writing style is smooth, making this an enjoyable read.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Should Be Titled "How The Yankees Explain Pet Left Wing Causes" 26. Februar 2014

I enjoyed Donnelly's book on the 1995 playoff series, so I bought this naively expecting to see a book that would interweave Yankees history to the story of New York in a way that could be appreciated by those of us who have grown up in the area as fans of the team. What I got instead was a colossal waste of my money and a reminder of the insufferable arrogance I have had to see ruin so many sports books by dragging in cheerleading for left-wing social issues and politics as something the reader is supposed to nod his head in agreement with, and forgetting that there are Yankee fans who also represent the half of the nation that doesn't for instance subscribe to the nobility of Stonewall or Occupy Wall Street, or who think Ronald Reagan was to blame for homelessness in the 1980s, or that poor David Dinkins inherited all his problems from Koch and started all the turnaround policies that Rudy Giuliani took credit for. Of course if you're part of the other half that agrees with Donnelly on all this, then I suppose you'll like the book and give this review negative feedback. So be it. I can only describe my reactions as a Yankee fan who saw a book that is not so much about the Yankees reflecting the character of New York but how one person likes to see the Yankees as a metaphor for his own personal politics, and that wasn't the kind of book I expected to read.
