Über den Autor
Cressida Cowell lives in London with her husband, Simon; their children Maisie, Clementine, and Alexander; and two cats, Lily and Baloo. In addition to translating Hiccup's memoirs, she has also written and illustrated picture books including Hiccup, the Viking Who Was Seasick, Little Bo Peep's Library Book, and That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown.

SPOILER ALERT My 9 year old son loves this series for their fun and adventure, but I hope this is not the beginning of the end for our enjoyment of these books. I personally read it after my son brought it to me with concern. I found a good amount of the content scary and downright disturbing and a big change from the others- and none of this is revealed in the Amazon description of the book. I usually don't write reviews, but I'm doing so as a warning to other parents that may be concerned about some of the things that bothered me. The story contains a witch that tries to kill Hiccup, Scarers are blood sucking bat-like creatures that smell fear and swarm you the more afraid that you are, characters speak of human sacrifice and hear screaming on nearby islands, unacceptable "runt" infants are abandoned to die on the sea or exposed on a mountainside, a ghost legend is told about a woman that searches for the runt infant that her husband disposed of, and a father murders his son by running him through with a sword.
Great series- love seeing it continued

My two boys have been reading this series over the past 2 years (thru ages 7-11) and really enjoyed it. They tore through this last one and hope there's more. It's a fun and engaging series with quirky nuances in the presentation that keep them interested, which for young readers is the most important thing - keep them interested, keep them reading. But the series also has some good moral lessons on character and life, so that's an added bonus from a lot of the 'poopy' books out there.

I recently finished reading this entire series to my four year old son and six year old daughter. After months of being begged every night for "one more page mommy, one more sentence mommy, one more word mommy!" I have to admit that I was bummed when we finished the 8th (and so far final) book. On the upside, my 4 year old wasn't able to follow the plot as closely as his big sister was, so maybe I'll be able to read them all over again in a year or two!
