I live in Austria so my spoken German is relatively good. This little gem however teaches you the grammar as well as the important phrases, in easy day by day steps. I would reccommend it to anyone. I teach English to the Austrians, so I know what I want in a book. Well done.

I have found answers to questions about German grammar more easily than from many other expensive guides. Gives you just enough information to understand the common forms and structure without over complicating the things you wont need to know until you are a very advanced student.
Lays it out in a straightforward manner. I could have saved myself 40 bucks worth of grammar study books, if I had gotten this one first.

I want to add, that this book will be most helpful to those who are not complete beginners in German, unless they have an excellent education in English grammar and structure first. Since actually teaching english grammar stopped in most American schools about twenty five years ago, this book may be confusing unless you first refresh your understanding of English grammar.
If you are studying through Duolingo, this book will help you identify errors in the program, and explain some things that both Duolingo, and Rosetta Stone expect you to learn through trial and error.

I'm really enjoying this book, however I wouldn't recommend it to a complete beginner. I have a couple years of previous German instruction and this book really clarifies a lot of topics that were a bit cloudy for me at first. Each lesson is short but well explained. German can be confusing so I really like this aspect of the book. It explains the more difficult concepts simply, such as all the cases. You can't beat the price either!

excellent book - I am working on it, but find it an excellent learning tool - lots of handy hints and sensible easy-to-understand instructions. I would recommend it to anyone.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Has its uses, but rather poorly structured 1. März 2014

Several of the reviews here have already suggested that this book is better suited to those who have already started learning German, rather than the complete beginner. I agree; too little thought has been given to the sequence in which grammatical concepts are presented. (There are some glaring omissions, too: for instance, when introducing the modal verbs it would have been a good idea to explain that "muss nicht" means "doesn't have to", not "must not".)

It's not useless (and, unlike far too many books on language, it doesn't misinform the student - at least not often and not in crass ways). But it's not a great way to start learning German.

This one I really like. No audio, which would make it great, but what the hey, the layout is logical and steps through the basics nicely. It suits me.
