Kurzbeschreibung

HOW HARD CAN IT BE??

Bobby Hutchinson, a best selling Harlequin romance writer, decides to open a B&B in Vancouver, B.C.

Despite never having stayed in a B&B and knowing absolutely nothing about running one, she jumps right in. Strange people from nearby and halfway around the world arrive at her home with their stories and struggles, not to mention their baggage, psychological and otherwise.

In explaining why she opened a B&B, she says, "I was far too old for prostitution, the only other job I could think of which might net enough to pay the mortgage."

˃˃˃ HUMOR, A LITTLE TRAGEDY AND MANY LIFE LESSONS. (But mostly humor.)

What does a hostess do when a dog rips the bathroom apart? Or gerbils reproduce in the attic?

Make wonderful breakfasts and keep on keeping on.

˃˃˃ SURE FIRE BREAKFAST RECIPES

Lots of other recipes as well, guaranteed to turn out. And some advice that may or may not work, but what can you lose by trying?

Scroll up and grab a copy of HOW NOT TO RUN A B&B!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not Quite What I Expected... 8. Mai 2012
Von Mama2Two - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

First, I will say that I found the author to be very charming. I enjoyed her writing style and, overall, I enjoyed the book. However, the book wasn't quite what I expected. The beginning started more in line with how I would have liked the book to go; I guess I assumed there would be more details about the actual running of a B&B (or, based on the title, more details about mishaps that occurred while the author was running said B&B). By about halfway through, I was kind of dragging through the story. I felt that the focus on the author's personal life (spiritual beliefs, etc.) took away from the parts that I found interesting. Overall, I would recommend the book to people who are interested in reading a lighthearted overview of a "woman of a certain age" establishing her home as a B&B, but it isn't a book that I would recommend to friends who are looking for something great to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wow! What a Great Read 18. März 2012
Von LovesToReadBooks - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Not that I want to run a B&B ... I don't... but when I saw that this author was a respected author-turned-B&B owner, I was intrigued. The sample alone gives you an example of the reason Hutchinson has published so many books & encouraged me to buy this one, though it's nonfiction and not her usual Romance genre. The fine story-telling present in her Romances is even more evident here.

The cast of characters includes eccentric neighbors, potential lovers, devoted friends, unusual guests, and the delightfully hard-working but engagingly self-deprecating narrator/author herself. Interwoven with intimate details of the author's life as divorcee, mother, professional writer, and fledgling business-woman, HOW NOT TO RUN A B&B is a wonderfully written, humorous adventure into the universal human condition, hosted by the keen-witted yet always compassionate Hutchinson. From the lonely-yet-loveable elderly neighbor who roams the B&B's yard in the middle of the night searching for his cat (who thinks the elaborately landscaped backyard of the B&B is HIS yard) and terrorizing the sleeping guests by screaming for his cat, to the young woman who teaches a Sultan's children in some small kingdom and comes to stay at the B&B after "finding the man she wants to marry" on the Internet, the crowd at the author's place is funny, sad, charming, irritating, stingy, generous, selfish, loving and devoted.

In short, the pilgrims and neighbors who make the trek to this B&B and who, meanwhile, relate their stories, are as varied, humorous, and poignant as Chaucer's pilgrims in THE CANTERBURY TALES: each pilgrim and his story at the B&B is interwoven with the author's literate, wry observations on human nature as well as with the author's own trials, tribulations, and triumphs as she attempts to run a successful business, feed her guests' bodies and spirits, continue her own writing career, and maintain her sense of humor about life - all while figuring out new & delicious menu items for the guests' breakfasts after she mistakenly, as a joke, adds "surprise me" to the daily breakfast menu and everyone selects it.

Entertainingly written, compassionately observed, witty, literate, charming, and memorable. Filled with business sense, spiritual wisdom about the human condition, engaging stories, and delicious recipes, this book is a wonderful addition to memoirs, cookbooks, short story collections, and business how-to's (or how-not-to's) alike. It reminded me of the wonderful novel LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE, but without the fantasy element, always remaining firmly grounded in the poignant, gritty, loving reality of life. This book feeds the intellect, soul (& stomach if you make the delicious breakfast meals whose recipes the author so generously provided) and makes you long to go with sundry other folks on a pilgrimage to Bobby Hutchinson's B&B.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Extremely entertaining memoir 19. April 2012

How Not To Run A B&B is filled with wonderful anecdotes about the author's time as owner of a Bed and Breakfast in Vancouver. The visitors to her B&B and her wonderfully quirky neighbors and friends make this a truly enchanting story. The recipes included in the book are a great bonus and better than most of the breakfast books offered these days.

The author's philosophy and wisdom combined with her compassion really make her story compelling. Despite a couple typos and formatting issues, this is completely entertaining and a strong 4.5 star read.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Stories nice, spiritual stuff is out there 16. Juni 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

The stories were nice and well told, but the spirituality stuff is a little hinky. Plus I was totally turned off when she left her husband with a terminal illness because "taking responsibility for someone else's problems is not only arrogant, but self defeating for both of you." Seriously!?! The man you married, till death do you part, for better for worse, for sickness and in health!?!

Ok, that's off the topic, but it just showed me where this lady is in her life and why she can't hold a decent relationship. I don't really care to hear anymore from her. Stopped reading and deleted from library.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This Isn't A Business Book 22. April 2012
Von Steve Thomas - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Bobby Hutchinson calls "How Not To Run A B&B" but it's very easy tosee, almost from the first, that this isn't a book about business, but rather a book about how to live your life - and unlike many books in which spiritual values are held in sharp focus, this one doesn't look down a sharp nose critically at you. I'd love to have Ms. Hutchinson as a sister - and her creator surely is proud of this woman as well.

"Dreams - and significant others - are like buses," she writes. "There's always another one coming down the street. And if this one didn't stop for you, it just wasn't your bus. By ranting and raving and flagging it down, you're blocking the way for yours, which is trying to pull up in front of you, but can't because of the obstruction. Let go, smile, and start watching for the next one."

Books, I have found, are much the same. I used to borrow 10 books from the library - because I didn't want to carry more - and I'd find half of them, I never finished. It wasn't the subject matter; I could enjoy a book on quantum electrodynamics if it were well written. I find that in the last year, I've obtained 1200 books (or previews) on Kindle, and found that the ratio of good to dreck hasn't changed much, and surprisingly, isn't much different for major publishing house versus aelf-published books.

Part of it is that tastes differ. There's the story of the guy who finds his best friend in bed with his wife; I have to, Sam; she's my wife, but why you? I don't expect everybody to share my tastes, which is why I try to explain in reviews why I liked or disliked a book; with any luck you'll avoid buying a book and wasting your time on something I loved but you'll hate.

So understand this: Ms Hutchinson had written something like 43 Harlequin romance novels before she took up the B&B trade, and this book pretty much is a series of love stories about her guests, friends. neighbors, and lovers, not all of whom are particularly loveable. She doesn't posit herself as blameless; she says her nickname justifiably was "Catch and Release" Hutchinson. People generally do what they can, because they are who they are, and she believes people enter her life when she has something to learn from them.

And now I've entered her life, if marginally, with this review. Towards the end of the book, she dreams of concentrating more on her new fly fishing resort, and less on writing. She is, however, what she is, and she needs to do what she does - which is to write. Perhaps she can morph a little to titles which are more appealing to a general audience, rather than the niche audience that Harlequin markets to - but writing, none the less.
