Three years ago columnist and author Grace Dent joined new social network site Twitter, mainly as a place to dump her surplus jokes, rant about garbage TV and post exclusive j-pegs of her hot new toenail-varnish. But as every 're-tweet' and 'Follow Friday' saw her audience figures soar by tens of thousands, Dent found herself centre-stage in an all-consuming highly addictive social network revolution. One where the gags, gossip, scandal and backstabbing literally never stop.

Here Dent takes a hilarious, acerbic look at what's really going on in Twitterworld; who's actually tweeting, who's really reading your tweets and what's behind the 140 character lies they tell. She looks at the highs and grotty lows of twitter addiction, the shameless social climbers, the friends you'll make and the ones you can't get bloody rid of, the barefaced bragging, the shameful celeb-stalking, and the truth about 'twanking', twitter cliques, angry 'twitchfork mobs' and dealing with trolls.

Grace Dent is the author of a number of young adult books, and a TV critic, so don't expect "How to Leave Twitter" to be Marshall McLuhan or Ludwig Wittgenstein-level critique. Indeed, only the last chapter is about leaving Twitter, though if you dislike her chatty, snarky style, the whole book will feel like one long warning away from it.

Personally, I thought Dent's treatment was just right, in a reflexive sort of way: it's 95% breezy, superficial and diverting, and 5% really thoughtful, rather like Twitter itself. If you want a serious but funny meditation on new media and the challenges of disentangling yourself from it, Susan Maushart's The Winter of Our Disconnect is far better.

4.0 von 5 Sternen All there is to know about twitter, tweeting and what birds really think! 5. Januar 2012

A really funny, sharp look at twitter. If you want to know how the whole twitter thing works this is the book for you. If you just want to laugh at people who twitter this is also the book for you. In other words, no matter what you think about twitter you will enjoy this book. Grace Dent can write and no, I am not biased because we just happen to share a name.
PS a tiny bit more editing would have earned this book a 5 * (give the reader a chance to breathe between laughs)

(Was ist das?)
It puzzles me how many people still believe friendship or at least bonhomie conducted in cyberspace isnt a valid form of social contact, but, say, being thrown together at an NCT group, or in halls of residence, or because your desks at work face on to each other, is. Or that anodyne small talk with a neighbour is genuine social stimulation, whereas chatting over Twitter with someone 6,000 miles away who loves Top Gun and Jefferson Airplane as much as you do is just lonely, dysfunctional nerds clashing in cyberspace. "e;
