I had basically zero cooking skills when I bought this book, and I was really just looking for a way to have healthy and tasty meals that weren't loaded down with all kinds of artificial additives and ingredients.

This book was really helpful, even in some unexpected ways. It covers the basic tools you'll need in your kitchen to avoid frustration and get the job done. It seems to cover pretty much every basic cooking skill. Also, I haven't tried all of the recipes, but the ones I've tried have turned out pretty well.

The bottom line is I wanted to make natural, healthy meals, but I used to be intimidated by cooking. Now I'm comfortable in my own kitchen, I can cook a few things pretty well, and I'm excited to try some more.

You also learn a lot of odds and ends about things to look for and things to avoid if you want a natural diet, so that was cool. This is a really helpful resource for anyone who is starting out learning to cook, or anybody who is interested in minimizing their intake of unnatural stuff when cooking at home.

Although the book was VERY basic, it was really full of good advice for the beginning cook - particularly someone who has never cooked! I've been cooking for 50-some years and enjoyed reading it because it brought memories of my first attempts at cooking.

This book has good nutritional advice. If more people ate this way then America and the world would be much healthier. As a novice cook, I really liked the equipment section and how to make your own stock.

Basic to the core ... Near-Zero Fluff and almost all useful information. Patrick Barrett starts with What to Eat and Why, and Which cooking equipment he deems necessary. I did NOT agree with all his 'essentials' at all however, and I also felt that promoting brand-name super-expensive items was, well heck, a cheap trick. That aside, I found the book's contents and Pat's recommendations astute. An unfortunately weak point was the repetitiveness of the recipes such as Broiling Steak, Broiling Pork, Broiling Chicken; all listed identical steps! Broiling Meats would have been a kinder title. The book is slim and brief ... still MORE recipes rather than duplicates, THAT might make it Five Stars. Then there would be no necessity for the author's suggestion to 'write me a positive review.'
