I was excited to find a book finally dedicated to the Buick performance engines, but after read it cover to cover, I was highly disappointed. Many of the topics seem to barely get 2 pages worth of discussion and only at the most basic level. For instance there is no inforamtion on how to set your engine timing to get the most performance out of it. The only thing I got out of the section on ignition was that HEI is better than points and Spark Boxes are better than HEI, which I think almost everyone working on an engine already knows. Also many references to Jim Burek of PAE, a Buick engine builder who scammed a lot of folks out of their hard earned money. I've enjoyed Jefferson's tech articles in various auto magazines, which left me even more perplexed as to how poor the information in this book turned out to be.
As for the book itself, aside from the cover, it contains only black and white photos, and the print quality seemed very poor compared to other books in this series. It looks like it was printed using a dot matrix printer.

How to Build Max-Performance Buick Engines (S-A Design) (Performance How-To) 11. Januar 2012

Very good manual with a great deal of info for turbo charged V6 engines.
Was looking for nailhead info. Real weak in that area and some of it turned out to be wrong.
Still a good book for the other applications covered.

PU because it stinks, a complete waste of money for all but the most inexperienced beginner. it is just a very superficial attempt to list alot of jubject matter in hopes of lureing in as many cash in hand victims as possible. Don't think you can read this book and then go build a performance Buick without alot more research.

dont buy this book. 22. Dezember 2012

I was really disappointed in this book. I worked in engineering and I crave knowledge. This book is a supreme disappointment. It does not contain any knowledge that cannot be obtained on the internet for free. It has some mistakes in it like telling you to drill a 7/16 hole and run a ¼ tap thru it, they mention 7/16 twice; I think they meant 7/32.

None of the modifications are illustrated with pictures. The pictures themselves are poor and look like photocopies of magazine articles. The book covers 4 different families of engines and none well. Unless you have a 64 Riviera, a 70GS and a turbo regal (all three) are clueless about engines and have no knowledge of the internet and forum groups, this book is not worth buying.
No step by step build format. Sparce detail. Poor text. 12. September 2014

Greatly disappointing book! Your money would be better served buying toilet paper! This book is just a compilation of facts and mostly useless information on some Buick engines. The photos are very poor quality and the text has little continuity. There is no way you or anyone else will be able to build a Buick engine using this book as an instructional guide! The detail needed and a step by step building/assembly process does not exist in this book. I have been in the process of building a 401 cubic inch Buick "Nailhead" and because the engine hasn't been produced since 1966 there is little "DETAILED" information on them anywhere!. What information there is, is scattered all over the internet and a few old articles from old street rod magazines. I had hoped this book would be helpful in my build, but what little Nailhead information is in this book has been plugged in to the text in a sloppy manner as if an after thought. To find it, I had to read through the entire text and high-lite what little I did find. I'm a retired mechanical engineer and have built many hot rods, street rods and customs. I've used other books to build engines such as a Ford 351 Cleveland which is also a somewhat unusual engine last produced in 1973. In comparison the book I used to build that engine was nicely detailed, great photos and a beginning to end instructional format. If you are not a very experienced engine mechanic and plan to rely on this book to build your Buick engine you will run into a ton of problems. I would rate this book lower than one star -- at least for my needs!
