Being a games tester before for 2 years and countless of beta tests before and after then I can agree with some parts of this book. The title should have been "Landing a job as a games tester".

Today I'm a Test Analyst thanks to games testing, but I was surprised to see how terminology is still not formalised in the games industry. Some of the techniques I know today we never used in games testing which would have saved us countless of hours and I would have still enjoyed having a pizza today.

This book is good for those who are interested in getting an idea of how to get into the games industry as a tester. I would have liked to see the part of reporting bugs being expanded since this is one of the key measurements. Many bug reports I saw was horrid and this is because people are not taught how to spell(you'll be surprised) and what a good bug report should consist of.

I enjoyed the writing style though it did become annoying to read repeated phrases of how different it is to playing games. The resume and approaches are pretty much what any career handbook will tell you so that became boring.
Overall the book is good, but I recommend expanding your skills not just by proving your interest in the games industry but analytical and communication skills as well.

I always hear people talking about wanting to become game testers. I always hear people talk about how it is a real job and what they do, but no one ever actually tells you how to find and get the jobs!

This guide goes over everything from learning the skills to writing your resume to actually finding and landing the jobs. It lets you know if you are actually cut out for the work.

If you have ever thought about becoming a game tester, this books worth a lot more than the price tag!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very well written book from an expert game tester 23. April 2012

Back when D&D and the Atari system were coming out, I wanted to be a game tester. Went into the military instead, got to be a programmer at NORAD, and that's where I learned I wasn't a tester. The testers, which called themselves Black Ops, had the job of getting the US missile warning software to fail (in a detached environment). Twenty years ago, their best tester showed that if a digital Soviet submarine sailed up the Nile and launched, my group's program would flag it as an error and not report it. Also, if exactly 1000 missiles all detonated on the exact same spot at the exact same time, it would cause a rollover error, and the whole program would reset. The generals were informed these and other errors, and fixes were often demanded within hours. My programming group feared and admired the Black Ops testers.

This is a book aimed at those wanting to be a tester. There is great advice in here, most involving making a presence for yourself online. A wide list of sites are suggested for building up bona fides. Great testing is something that requires true talent, and the online boards will sort out the great testers from the wannabes.

Computers today have a trillion times the power of computers from the 1990's. If you like messing around with programming, it's not hard to find something that's never been found before, usually due to lack of computational power. Experiment, and blog about it. That's the advice given here, and it's good stuff.

5.0 von 5 Sternen My dream job! 6. April 2012

I, like millions of people, play video games a lot. I mainly play computer games and keeping up with the latest specs can be super expensive, not to mention the games themselves. A few of them even charge per month just to play. So the aspect of actually playing a video game FOR money instead of spending money on them is a really awesome idea in my opinion.

This guide is awesome for anyone even thinking about testing video games. It goes through details of exactly what a real game tester does, how to find jobs for testers, and most importantly how to get the job once you find it. (Cause lets face it, everyone and their uncle wants a job like that.) I do warn some that game testing is not for everyone, it is a real job still. However if you truly love video games, and are one of those types that try to find every secret of every game.. then this job is right up your ally.

I will definitely update this review when or if I hear back from any of the companies. (crossing fingers) But if I do not, it was still an awesome and eye-opening read!

I bought this book for my nephew who is in his first year of college. He is a video gamer and has said he'd like to have a job testing games. I read this before I gave it to him and was amazed at what I learned.

I thought my nephew just wanted to test video games because it would be fun. I really didn't want him to aspire to doing something like this - until I read this book. The skills that are required for someone to do this work are high level and not just your regular game player will be successful. More than describing the skills needed, the book tells you how and where you can develop those skills.

This book will get you ready to find a job doing what you enjoy in gaming and then tell you where and how to get that job. The resources the author shares are remarkable and the bonus pages share even more information than I expected.

My nephew is probably going to add some classes in college to help him get some of the skills that he will need. He wouldn't have known to do that if he hadn't read this book.
