Hourglass (CD + DVD) [CD+DVD]

Dave Gahan ist erwachsen geworden. Das hört man und sieht man. Innerlich ist er immer noch 25 (sagt er in diversen Interviews selbst). Auch das hört und sieht man. Sein Hourglass ist reifer, entspannter, spannender, experimenteller, ausgewogener, düsterer und auch poppiger geworden. Gegenüber seinem Erstlingswerk PM ist es einen großen Schritt in die richtige Richtung gegangen. Vergleichen sollte man(frau) aber diese Platte niemals mit seiner Hauptband. Es ist sein Soloalbum, genau wie Martin Gore seine Soloalben herausgebracht hat oder Alan Wilder sein Recoil Projekt (erfolgreich) bestreitet. Alles hat seine Berechtigung und ist zudem ein schönes Appetithäppchen auf ein neues DM-Album.
Schade ist eigentlich nur das (missratene)Video, welches dem Inhalt des Liedes Kingdom nicht gerecht wird. Die Studio-Session-Lieder sind sehr gelungen und vermitteln einen klasse Eindruck vom Spass an der gemeinsamen Arbeit im Studio. Eine 5.1 Abmischung wäre eventuell auch nicht verkehrt gewesen. Aber ich will ja nicht meckern ...
Daves Album ist mehr als gelungen und die CD/DVD Spezialausgabe ist für jeden Fan ein Pflichtkauf!

Dave hat ein Solo Album und kein Depeche Mode Album produziert, wofür ich ihm auch sehr dankbar bin. Mich interessiert es auch nicht wirklich, ob er bessere oder schlechtere Songs schreibt als Martin. Er versucht hier, seine Gefühle und das Erlebte zu verarbeiten. Gut, vielleicht passen einige Textzeilen nicht immer zu einander, aber er macht sich Gedanken und was die Umsetzung betrifft, die ist sehr, sehr gut!
Dieses Album ist kein Album für einen kurzen Moment - ich höre es mir mal kurz an und bilde mir mein Urteil - bei mir hat das nicht funktuniert.
Hätte ich damals die Ultra nach dem ersten Mal beurteilt, da wäre sie nicht so gut weg gekommen. Ich hab es mir immer und immer wieder angehört und es wurde immer genialer. Mittlerweile ist es für mich das Beste DM Album ever.
Hourglass ist da ähnlich. Teilweise schwere und kompakte Melodien, die am Anfang sehr verstörend klingen und wirken. Aber mittlerweile liebe ich das Album - und he, nur weil Dave drauf steht, heißt es noch lange nicht, dass ich es automatisch gut finden musste.

Zur Bonus DVD kann ich nur sagen 10/10

Die Studioversionen sind sehr gelungen. Vor allem Kingdom - klingt rockiger und das Schlagzeug treibt den Song richtig vorwärts.

Miracles klingt auch besser als die Studioversion. Die Gitarren und die Klaviereinlagen passen sehr gut zum Song.

Saw Something / A Little Lie - klingen auch sehr gut, den Liedern steht diese Instrumentierung irgendwie besser - sie sind nicht so mit elektroschnipseln überladen.

Endless kommt zum Schluss in einer reinen Piano Version daher - ein Traum...

Also, ich empfehle auf jeden Fall diese Deluxe Edition!!

The first three songs on the CD are absolutely awesome: "Saw something" is a wonderful electronic ballad that starts really slow and ends with a brilliant climax, so that you only want to close your eyes and let yourself fall into the arms of someone else. It is an excellent song and it has been a long time ago, that I have ever heard a song that really captured my heart like this. The second song "Kingdom" is a great dancetrack and is going to be one of these classic songs. "Deeper and deeper" is a song where people will have different opinions about: Either you'll hate it or you'll love it. I loved this song from the first tunes. It is smashing, fast, aggressive, "evil" and great for dancing.

"21 Days" sounds dark, slow and Dave has a real penetrating voice that sounds extremely sexy and which really turns me on. It reminds me a bit of DM "Ultra" times. The next song is the ballade "Miracles" that starts with an electronic sound layer, followed by Dave's striking slow voice and lyrics pointing out what I think and feel too. "Use you" sounds a bit like former DM songs. It's a great dance track, falling in the categorie nasty, evil, sexy and dangerous". Insoluble" is a kind of ingenious ballade starting with strong electro sounds that are really exciting, ambitious and diversified.

"Endless" is the most wicked song on this album. I have never heard some tunes like this before. It starts with some electrobeats which sound like the volume is consistently openend and closed. Dave's voice appears in an extremely resound and hypnotic way. I love this song and I am addicted to it. It's wicked, lush, sexy and a good song for DM partys. "A little lie" is a wonderfull balade with strong drums and great guitar tones that remind me of very old Simple Minds songs. Down" is a condigned last song on this album.

I have never liked Dave's first album "Paper Monster" that much. But this album is different. I am really impressed by the mature Dave and his extremely intense voice, of which I have the impression, that I have never heard it in this perfect quality ever before. The way Dave sings and in addition his lyrics really capture my heart and my soul. I thank Dave, as well as Andrew Philpott and Christian Eigner, for this excellent work and I hope to hear more music like this in the near future.

The DVD shows the studio sessions of Hourglass, Saw Something, Miracles, Kingdom, Little Lie and Endless. This means more instrumental (drums, guitars and only a piano for Endless) instead of electronic music. Some songs sound completely different, but nevertheless brilliant. Endless for example sounds like a complete new song (apart from the lyrics) and has a complete different tempo compared to the CD Version. Though I love the CD version, this version completely captured my heart by the way Dave sings, the haunting lyrics and the tunes of the piano. It is no waste of money to buy this edition of Hourglass.

The idea to show the handwritten lyrics (nice handwriting by the way) in the booklet, instead of just printing them as everyone does, is absolutely lovely. Thus the album gets a more individual character.
