Amazon.co.uk

The Horse and his Boy is a stirring and dramatic fantasy story that finds a young boy named Shasta on the run from his homeland with the talking horse, Bree. When the pair discover a deadly plot by the Calormen people to conquer the land of Narnia, the race is on to warn the inhabitants of the impending danger and to rescue them all from certain death.

None of the sheer magic of the Horse and His Boy has faded since it first delighted a generation of children in the 1950s, and anyone who has ever savoured the peculiar delights of Narnia will love this special edition, published in celebration of the centenary of CS Lewis. With its stylish, larger format featuring fine, hand-coloured illustrations by Pauline Baynes, all the magic of the originals can be found in this delectable tale which will continue to enchant hosts of new readers long into the future. --Susan Harrison -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Taschenbuch .

From Library Journal

This is an all-cast dramatization of the third book in Lewis's "Narnia" series. Those who have read all seven books will be better able to put this performance in context, but the uninitiated will enjoy this adventure tale in which, once again, intrepid children outwit nefarious grown-ups. Shasta is a young boy living in Calormene with a cruel man who claims to be his father. One night he overhears his "father" offering to sell him as a slave, so Shasta makes a break and sets out for the North. He meets Bree, a talking horse who becomes his companion. On their way they encounter Aravis, a high-born girl escaping an arranged marriage, and her talking horse. Despite their differences the children and horses learn to work together to reach the freedom they long for. In the meantime, they uncover a Calormene plot to conquer Narnia. The performances are energetic, and the characters easily distinguishable. This recording should not replace the book but rather should serve as an introduction to it. It is an interesting observation that many people who do not care for The Chronicles of Narnia as a whole, nevertheless like The Horse and His Boy or at least find it the "least objectionable" of the lot. Conversely, there are those who adore the entire Chronicles of Narnia, but who like The Horse and His Boy the least. Perhaps both positions say something about the slightly different flavor this book carries compared to the other six Narnian books. I happen to hold to a third position of liking the whole series and finding The Horse and His Boy the best. Perhaps it's because of the story, or perhaps it's the eastern characters and religions, or the talking animals, or Lewis's humor, or all of the above, but I liked this Narnian Chronicle the most. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

You probably already know that C.S. Lewis wrote seven "Chronicles of Narnia"; while it's hard(and really not necessary)to choose a "best" in the series, this may be it. "The Horse and his Boy"(wonderful title)is a rollicking, breathlessly fast-paced adventure, with each character-both villains and heroes-completely believable and multi-faceted-especially Bree, the talking war-horse. And if you're new to C.S. Lewis' work, rest assured his fantasies are as far from "cute" as you can get; his protagonists always have quite a lot of tough adventures they have to endure, sometimes in the form of violent battles(though they never got too violent for an 11 year old at her first reading). Wonderful language, incredible imagination, characters who become friends-what more could you want? I defy any reader to be disappointed.

This is the third volume (chronologically) in The Chronicles of Narnia (after The Magician's Nephew; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and before Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Last Battle).

In this book we meet Shasta, a young boy who's been raised by Arsheesh, a poor fisherman far south in Calormen. One day comes a stranger on a strong warhorse, although it soon appears that this is a tyrannic Tarkaan who wants to buy Shasta and make him a slave. But his horse is actually Bree (does that name ring a bell?), a talking horse from Narnia, who come night, decides to gallop home to freedom, taking Shasta along.

While on the run across the desert, they meet a girl named Aravis and her talking mare Hwin, who's also fleeing, but from her future marriage with Ahoshta Tarkaan the vizier.

Their first stop will be the city of Tashbaan, where Shasta is mistaken for Corin, King Lune of Archenand's son. There he'll also make the acquaintance, among others, of Queen Susan, whom we met in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and learn that she's also about to marry Rabadash, the mighty Tisroc of Calormen's son, but doesn't want to.

Later, Shasta will become a hero by warning King Lune of an imminent attack by both disappointed bridegrooms.

My opinion on this book is so-so. Again, I think Avaris and Shasta's tumultuous adventure is something that can really appeal to a younger audience but, this makes me feel sorry, I personally just failed to get into it. Mark you, I still think I'm going to read the Chronicles of Narnia to my kids when I have some... I'm sure they'll enjoy them.
