The time is 1941, and British bombers attacking Germany are being blown out of the sky in horrific numbers. How do the Nazis know they're coming? The answer is an infant technology called radar, and the Brits--with help from the Danish Resistance--must figure out how and where the German radar stations operate.
Follett, an old pro at World War II storytelling, vividly evokes the period, creating a sense not of historical re-creation but of urgently unfolding news. His cast of characters is memorable, including Harald Olufsen, a brainy 18-year-old pulled into the Resistance half against his will, and--typically for Follett--several central, well-drawn women. The plot does have some predictable elements: for example, from the time Harald first encounters a tiny wood-and-linen biplane called a Hornet Moth, half-rotted and stored away in a Danish barn, we know that it will heroically take to the skies. Then, when the very outcome of the war begins to turn on Harald getting a certain roll of film from Denmark to England, well... you can see where things are headed. But it's great fun to watch them develop, and Follett throws in just enough unexpected shocks to keep you off balance. Though it lacks the intensity of Eye of the Needle, Follett's finest and best-known book, Hornet Flight offers generous helpings of suspense and a climax that could hardly be more satisfying. --Nicholas H. Popular suspense writer Follett understandably gravitates to the inherently exciting world of international intrigue that all of Europe devolved into as a result of Germany's over-land-and-sea aggression, which began in 1939. In all German-occupied countries, collaboration versus resistance was on the mind of everyone, from government official to provincial farmer. That life-or-death predicament is at the core of Follett's new novel, in which a vastly crucial military question is plaguing British strategists, including none other than Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The question is, Why are so many British airplanes being shot from the skies as they approach Continental targets? Digby Hoare, Churchill's assistant, has been assigned the task of finding out the answer. As Hoare states the difficult problem before him, "When we get to Germany, they're ready for us. They know we're coming." Hoare turns to Hermia, a young woman working as an analyst in charge of British intelligence's "Denmark desk." She was the founder of a small spy network in Denmark which passed military information to British intelligence. Hermia is engaged to a Danish fighter pilot grounded by the German occupation, and he has a younger brother still in school, preparing for college but seething with indignation over Denmark's quick surrender after the German invasion. The individual and collective roles these individuals play in supplying an answer to why Germany is aware in advance of British air raids are woven into the tense fabric of this consistently compelling novel. My first introduction to this writer's work was a book that has become a classic in the genre, "The Eye Of The Needle". For several books, and even more years, Mr. Follett pursued very different books like, "The Pillars Of The Earth", which was one of his most successful books, and has even lead to a "Pillars Of The Earth Day" annually. Many people enjoy both the areas that the author has ventured in to, but if given only one choice, I prefer the type that I first read.
He returned to the present genre with, "Code To Zero", which is the weakest of the spy genre he has produced since returning to it. "Jackdaws", was closer to historically based fiction, and it was very, very good. His newest, "Hornet Flight", is also well worth your time, and is close to, "Jackdaws", you will have to decide which you prefer.
He notes at the outset that, "Some of what follows really happened." Much less historical detail than he prefaced the last book with, but still intriguing for those who have read the history that takes place when this book is set. What he continued from his previous book was to place female characters front and center, on both the sides, that you will hope will succeed, and on the side of the Nazis which require no elaboration.
This book is a bit predictable, but I am hesitant to be too critical for I don't know how much of the tale is based upon fact. If some events are predictable but true, they are breathtaking, if only a figment of the author's imagination, they are expected and not up to the level Mr. Follett writes at when at his best.
Prime Minister Churchill appears and is portrayed accurately. There is also a character that was a close confidant and scientific advisor to Mr. Churchill during the war that may be the basis for one character in the book. I don't want to give what is a personal guess away, for it could spoil the book for some. If others agree with the observation, I look forward to reading the comments they offer.
Mr. Follett is very good at what he does and he rarely makes a misstep with a book. "Hornet Flight", is absolutely one of his stronger works, even if it is not his very best. Mr. Follett when good or very good, is still better than most others who attempt the genre.

The book starts good, but it has just too many coincidences. Every thing that might go bad does and the characters keep bumping into each other by accident and the end is a real pain. I was glad it finally ended and the heroes finally managed to safe the world, big surprise that.

Durch Zufall habe ich in der Buchhandlung den neuesten Ken Follett entdeckt und mußte ihn mir sofort kaufen. Ich lese Follett-Bücher sehr gern und kenne bis auf zwei alle schon - und leider ist dieses bei weitem nicht sein Bestes. Zwar sind die Charaktere wie immer plastisch und interessant, das Buch ist auch größtenteils ziemlich spannend, und Follett hat auch hier anscheinend wieder viel recherchiert (viele Details über die bislang eher unbekannte dänische Widerstandsbewegung und auch über die ersten Fluganfänge- hiervon hätte es für meinen Geschmack allerdings etwas weniger sein können), aber das Plot an sich ist, mit Verlaub gesagt, ziemlich mies. Zwei Teenager werden mehr oder minder zufällig in die dänische Widerstandbewegung verwickelt und entkommen den Nazis am Ende mit einer Hornet (einem uralten Doppeldecker) mit natürlich hochgradig wichtigen Informationen, dank der die Alliierten dann den Krieg gewinnen... Im Laufe des Buchs gewinnt man den Eindruck, Ken Follett hätte eine plötzliche Begeisterung für Murphy's Law entwickelt, denn was schiefgehen kann, geht dann auch schief- ständig und immer wieder, und die Story hangelt sich nur so von einem Zufall zum nächsten.
Fazit: nach normalen Maßstäben kein schlechtes, sondern mittelmäßiges Buch, nach Follett-Maßstäben allerdings ziemlich mies. Lieber (gegebenenfalls nochmal) ‚The Needle' oder auch den ‚Hornet'-Vorgänger ‚Jackdaws' lesen, auch die bewegen sich im Spionagemilieu des 2. Weltkriegs und sind ‚Follett at its best'.
