Der Journalist David Simon hat 1988 die einmalige Chance bekommen, den Detectives der Mordkommission von Baltimore ein ganzes Jahr lang über die Schulter schauen zu dürfen. Das vorliegende Buch ist das Ergebnis. Man vergisst beim Lesen sehr schnell, dass man hier keinen Roman liest, da Simon die Ereignisse sehr eindringlich schildert. Es ist ihm offenbar gelungen, von den Detectives sehr schnell akzeptiert - oder schlicht übersehen - zu werden.
Man durchlebt gemeinsam mit ihnen einige Fälle vom Auftauchen der Leiche idealerweise bis hin zum Finden des Täters. Doch das läuft nicht immer so, da wir hier nun mal nicht in einer dieser schön konstruierten TV-Episodenhandlungen sind. Dem "perfect year" von Garvey zB, dem es tatsächlich gelingt, jeden einzelnen seiner Fälle aufzuklären, sei hier u.a. der Hauptfall von Pellegrini entgegengestellt, der nicht zu einem Abschluss gebracht werden kann, was den Ermittler aufgrund der Begleitumstände fast in den Abgrund reisst. Wohl ebenso wie Simon lernt man diese Männer, die Detectives, ihre Sergeants und ihren Lieutenant im Lauf des Buches sehr gut kennen und kann kaum anders, als sie ins Herz zu schließen.
Beleuchtet wird auch der typische Ablauf eines Verhörs oder welche Wege ein Fall vor Gericht typischerweise nimmt. Interessant ist hierbei die Beobachtung, dass einschlägige Krimi- und Anwaltsserien die öffentliche Wahrnehmung so geprägt haben, dass Geschworene geradezu erwarten, eine schöne Beweiskette bis hin zum Motiv präsentiert zu bekommen, was so allerdings selten vorkommt in der Realität.
"Homicide" ist ein höchst interessantes und toll geschriebenes Buch, das jedem ans Herz zu legen ist, der sich für Polizeiarbeit oder Krimis interessiert, wobei Zartbesaitete allerdings besser die Finger davon lassen sollten. Ebenfalls sehr zu empfehlen ist das Buch für Fans der HBO-Serie "The Wire", an der Simon maßgeblich beteiligt war. Hier hat das alles begonnen. Und wer würde sich schon die Gelegenheit entgehen lassen, den echten Sergeant Jay Landsman zu treffen?

I picked up this book without realizing that it was the genesis of the television program by the same name, and I was immediately dragged in to the stories. Written as a yearlong narrative of the events and personalities of the Baltimore Police Homicide Division, it really gives the reader a feeling of being along for the investigation. The dialogue and descriptions are so realistic and insightful that I found myself wondering how the Detectives felt to read this objective reflection of themselves. The pacing of the book contributes to the overall effectiveness of the narrative by educating the reader slowly as to the characters, the lingo and the mentality of a Baltimore homocide detective. By the end (and I was sorry to have it end) I felt like I knew the detectives and the criminals and the victims and their families. If you like true crime, this is the book for you!

A very interesting book about police detectives work. Even if the book might be a little outdated the happenings are not outdated. Unfortunately a lot of major crimes occure and the detectives from a police department start to investigate. The one who wants to get some information beside the broadcoast and tv shows will make a goodcatch with this one.
