Kim Laidlaw is a cookbook editor, food writer, and baker who has been in the kitchen covered in flour since she was big enough to stir the biscuit dough. She has worked in the cookbook world for over nine years and was the first blogger on KQED’s popular Bay Area Bites blog, which launched in 2005. Kim previously worked as a professional baker at La Farine French Bakery in Oakland, CA.

I found out about this book several months ago while it was an exclusive Williams-Sonoma purchase. A fellow blogger had contributed a recipe to it and when I peeked through the pages I knew I had to have it for my collection. As soon as it was released on, I snatched it up!

I've already tried a few recipes from the book and they've turned out great. They are simple with clear instructions, and a good amount of pictures to recipes. I also like how the book is divided into various recipe categories:

- Breakfast
- Breads
- Cookies & Bars
- Cakes & Cupcakes
- Pies & Tarts
- Custards & Souffles

I also like that this isn't your typical 'desserts-only' cookbook. As you can see from the sections, it covers sweet and savory, baked comfort classics. I've found that the recipes have all been solid across the board - from savory breakfast items, to sweet and decadent desserts.

It's a great item to add to your cookbook library.

I did not expect much from this book to be honest, so it has been a really nice revelation. I've now baked three things from here and they turned out perfectly: red velvet cupcakes, blueberry lemon bread, and cranberry oat muffins (twice!). The muffin recipe is possibly the best one I've ever made or tried with a perfect mix of sweet and tart and a wonderful texture. I planned on taking them to work but my husband said "no way".

The q&a with bakers around the country is a nice touch. A good share of nicely done photos though not for every recipe. And I really appreciate the weight measurements. Overall a wonderful baking cookbook that will be used frequently in my kitchen and one I highly recommend.

UPDATE: This has officially become my go-to everyday baking book. I've baked about half a dozen things from here and every single one has been praise-worthy. The biscotti were the best I have ever tasted and the aroma while they were baking induced some serious drooling. Also thumbs up for the pumpkin cake with pecan streusel. The layout is very user friendly and I love that the recipes include weight measurements. I just can't say enough good things about this book!

2nd UPDATE: I won't downgrade my rating because this is still one of my favorite everyday baking books but wanted to note a few errors. The volume to weight conversion for sugar (and I think brown sugar) is off. Every other baking book I own says 1 cup sugar = 200g. But this book says 1 cup = 250g. None of the recipes I've made produced overly sweet results when using the weight measurement so I'm inclined to think if you use the volume measure, you may want to up the sugar a bit. The second error is in the recipe for the almond lemon cake from Tartine. It says the recipe produces two 9x5 inch loafs. I also own the Tartine cookbook and it has the same recipe which says it produces one 9x5 inch loaf. I made the cake and it definitely did not produce enough batter for two loaves. It was a really good cake though - the crunchy lemon sugar topping added a great dimension.

I baked a few desserts from these book and it tasted wonderful. The instructions is clear with beautiful pictures and alot of yummy recipes. I can't wait to bake from way through the book.

Here is a public service warning: If you are already feeling conscious about your weight and perhaps are trying to avoid lovely cakes, biscuits and other baked goods turned away now!

Do we have a treat for you! No, not an edible one. Well it might be, but that is not recommended. Put simply here is a wonderful book. Buy it. Read it. Cook from it. Enjoy the results. End of review.

Unfortunately YUM's editor insists on a little more text... so here goes. This is a luxurious yet practical book looking at baking that encourages you to have a go and make your own delicious cakes and biscuits which could grace any café, restaurant or store. The author has done a great job in pulling together this book, taking recipes from their own collection and from some of the best bakeries in the United States as well as a few acclaimed baking blogs for good measure.

Backed by some really nice, mouth-watering photographs of the finished product, this book does help set the standard for similar items of its genre. It is not a cheap and cheerful listing of many recipes (nothing wrong with that, each has their own merits) but this is an engaging, inspirational, trusting book that actively encourages you to get your hands dirty and get busy in the kitchen.

As the author says in the book's introduction in response to the question Why Bake? "... this book is about homemade goodness, made with lots of love" and "... the best part of baking is the process. From stirring the batter to pulling the finished cake out of the oven to taking the first bite of your sweet creation, baking brings friends and family together."

From the beginning the reader is given a lot of hints and tips that might seem obvious to some, but they can inspire a "light bulb" moment to the uninitiated and really make a positive difference to the overall baking experience and results. Then a basic primer about key tools that will help the cook and a look at ingredients and then it is straight to the recipes.

The recipes are surrounded by full-colour photographs which are close to being indecent due to their sheer "come and taste me" vision. After drawing you in (as if you need persuading) you see the recipe which is cleanly and simply laid out, split between an introduction, ingredients list, instructions and various hints and tips. All measurements are given in both metric and imperial which is a great thing to find from an American publisher.

The only gripe is a common one. Please put at least an approximation of how long the recipe might take to prepare and to cook in a CLEAR and PROMINENT standout position. It really can make a difference when speed browsing for some last-minute ideas.

Recipes are filed in sections - breakfast, breads, cookies and bars, cakes and cupcakes, pies and tarts and custards and soufflés. Each section has its own mini-index and at the end of the book there is also a great comprehensive index so you can navigate your way around this book in many ways.

It is true, there is not a shortage of bakery-related cookery books and it often takes a specific one to "gel" with the reader. This one, in any case, manages to hit many targets, being both suitable for the nervous beginner, inspiring for the confident amateur and even maybe a reference for the accomplished pro as well. It inspires as well as informs. Many books can do one or the other. Not all manage to do both, especially with such aplomb.

YUM reviewed the eBook version of this so we don't know if the physical book is even more luxurious and tempting. It is strange what a bit of paper and binding can do... now, where is that local bookstore...

I stumbled across this book when actually searching for a different one and I am so thankful that I did. I have made six items already and there are so many more that I have tagged to make. Huge selling points were, clear and easy to read recipes, use of everyday ingredients, and loads of gorgeous photos showing various stages of the goodies.
This book contains a wonderful array of scratch baking, from sweet to savory, breads and biscuits, cakes and tarts, and more and more. Which will also lead to more and more of my waistband!
