But the harsh realities of the camp, and the evil Warden with her lizard-venom impregnated fingernails with her own reasons for making the boys in her charge dig so many holes, sometimes make dying seem like a great idea. When Stanley leaves the camp to go in search of his friend Zero, their journey towards freedom becomes a battle with hunger, thirst and heat in the shadow of Big Thumb--a mountain so entwined in Stanley's own family history that he knows if they can reach it they will somehow find salvation.
A complex story, riddled with the harsh imagery and barren despair, Holes is a perceptive and intricate homage to family and friendship which never shies away from the harshest of realities yet injects the story of a seemingly hopeless boy with a sly, sideways humour that crackles against the backdrop of the arid wastelands of the desert. Also, als ich dieses Buch auf den Tisch geknallt bekam, war ich zunächst etwas misstrauisch. Schließlich sollte dieses Schulbuch genauso langweilig sein, wie alle anderen. Doch umso mehr ich las, desto mehr mochte ich die Geschichte des übergewichtigen, verfluchten Jungen, der zu Unrecht in ein Erziehungscamp kommt und dort Löcher graben muss. Die Handlung nimmt viele spannende und unerwartete Wendungen und am Ende denkt man einfach nur- ach, was für ein schönes Märchen!
Übrigens ist dieses Buch ideal für Englisch-Lerner, die Sprache ist einfach und "schwierige" Wörter sind erklärt. Einen Stern Abzug gibt es wegen des Endes (ich will jetzt nix verraten), denn das hätte Luis Sachar doch bestimmt noch besser hinbekommen!
Absolut spannend, ein wenig traurig zwischendurch, ein paar Intrigen und Machenschaften mit inbegriffen, aber auch emotional und zum Teil sogar witzig aufgebaut.
Ein Buch, das man mehrmals lesen kann und man entdeckt immer wieder Dinge, die einem beim vorherigen Lesen nicht aufgefallen sind. Genauso wie bei Harry Potter - nur halt wesentlich kürzer, weniger komplex und mit weniger Zauberei.
Zusätzliche Empfehlung: Wer Holes gelesen hat, muss unbedingt Stanley Yelnats Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake lesen. Absolut witzig aufgebaut und geschrieben. Wer da nicht vor Lachen aus dem Sofa fällt - na, der hat einfach keinen Humor!
Ich habe diese Buch zusammen mit meinem neunjaehrigen Sohn gelesen, aber auch meine anderen beiden Kinder haben das Buch verschlungen. Anschliessend haben wir tagelang darueber diskutiert.
