What could more genuinely embody the spirit of Christmas (or Hogswatch, on the Discworld) than a Terry Pratchett book about the holiday season? Every secular Christmas tradition is included. But as this is the 21st Discworld novel, there are some unusual twists.
This year the Auditors, who want people to stop believing in things that aren't real, have hired an assassin to eliminate the Hogfather. (You know him: red robe, white beard, says, "Ho, ho, ho!") Their evil plot will destroy the Discworld unless someone covers for him. So someone does. Well, at least Death tries. He wears the costume and rides the sleigh drawn by four jolly pigs: Gouger, Tusker, Rooter and Snouter. He even comes down chimneys. But as fans of other Pratchett stories about Death know, he takes things literally. He gives children whatever they wish for and appears in person at Crumley's in The Maul.
Fans will welcome back Susan, Death of Rats (the Grim Squeaker), Albert and the wizardly faculty of Unseen University and revel in new personalities like Bilious, the "oh god of Hangovers." Probably the best book Pratchett has ever written (but then, I would give »Lords and Ladies« a bad credit). To give some arguments: The plot is great because of a) the characters, led by Susan, Death (going HO, HO, HO), the Death of Rats (going HEEK, HEEK, HEEK), Ridcully the Brown and the Oh God of Hangovers; b) the villain, which is Mr. Jonathan Teatime, who has a mind like a mirror crack'd: Lots of brilliant and beautiful facettes, but nevertheless something that's broken; and c)the plot itself, which is a thrilling whodunit, because though you know who had it done and who did it, you don't know How or, even more important, WHY. The resolution ... I won't tell you, but it's brilliant (like Mr. Teatime's brain?). Read this book. Read it again. At least each year when christmas is drawing near. Then think about the sun, and blood in the snow, and an assassin with a eyeball of glass ...

If you are sick and tired of the annual year-end happy holiday shopping season, this is the book for you. "Hogfather", another of the famous Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett, features a gut-busting look at Christmas on Discworld. Only, it looks as though "Hogswatchnight" is not going to happen this year. A cunning plan by the Auditors, who believe that the big jolly fat man is a nuisance, gets the Hogfather assassinated... at least temporarily. So, Hogswatchnight arrives and someone else has to fill in for the Hogfather. And who would you have, sliding down chimney, eating pork pies and shouting a jolly "HO HO HO"? Well, there is alway... DEATH. Sit back, turn off the yule-tide sing-a-longs, and enjoy. Along the sidelines there are as always the wizards of Unseen University, this time trying to keep the Dead where they belong. Because, with DEATH riding around on his hog-pulled sleigh and wearing a fake beard, nobody is taking care of the soul-business. And the Undead are literally piling up, refusing to die, and fighting for their right to... well, yes, um "life". And if you really believe those are the only problems occuring on Discworld this Christmas, whoops, "Hogwatch"... well, knowing Pratchett, you have got another think coming! this was one of the funniest books I've ever read, death is probably my personal favorite of the disc's characters. and this is probably death at his funniest! The footnotes were very entertaining, and terry pratchett put alot of work into this novel, it is very imaginative, and creative. Deffinatly a must for anyone who enjoys brittish humor and has the time to read the 250+\- pages it contains.

My favorite Pratchett book (so far...)
