Amazon.com

Paul Johnson, whose previous works include the distinguished Modern Times and A History of the Jews, has produced an epic that spans the history of the American people over the past 400 years. The prolific narrative covers every aspect of U.S. history, from science, customs, religion, and politics to the individual men and women who have helped shape the nation. His detailed, provocative examinations of political and social icons, from Lyndon Johnson to Norman Rockwell, are especially strong. Johnson's text is intelligent and rich with detail, and yet extremely accessible for anyone interested in a reinterpretive analysis of America's past.

What makes this book unique is Johnson's approach to this self-professed Herculean task. The prevalent tone throughout is optimism. Whether he's discussing race relations, industrialization, the history of women, immigrants, Vietnam, or political correctness, Johnson--a staunch conservative who was born, bred, and educated in England--is openly enamored with America's past, particularly the hardships and tribulations that the nation has had to overcome. He sees this story as a series of important lessons, not just for Americans but for the whole of mankind as well. At a time when other contemporary scholars find it easier to bemoan the past, Johnson offers the reader "a compelling antidote to those who regard the future with pessimism." -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Booklist

At midcentury, Oxford don A. J. P. Taylor was the most readable of serious historians, suitably left wing for his times; Johnson (a former attendee of Taylor tutorials) has few competitors for the contemporary readability mantle and is suitably right wing for these times, as shown in his influential Modern Times (1982). So expectations arise for a memorable, pleasurable, and instructive reading experience, and they are magnificently met. No dull pages occupy the space between the Puritans' "Citty upon a Hill" and superpower America. Although he warns of his "ruthless selection and rejection of material," he compensates with long, perceptive analyses of political personalities (he estimates Truman as one of the greatest presidents and Harding as the recipient of bad press), parallel with astute analyses of such sociopolitical problems as slavery, economic episodes such as the Depression, or cultural matters such as jazz and painting, rendering about the latter the curious conclusion that Norman Rockwell and Andrew Wyeth are great painters. Whatever their aesthetic merit, those two are indeed "characteristically American," a phrase Johnson regularly deploys throughout this outstanding narrative interpretation, whether underscoring either the costs and injustices attending this country's creation or emphasizing admirable aspects of its democratic, constitutional achievement. A work one can't begin to disagree with even partially without reading it wholly, which legions will eagerly do. While Johnson might not be objective (he's well known as a conservative), that is not a good reason to keep away from this book. I would recommend reading Zinn's version also to get a viewpoint from the liberal side. One idea that works in this book is that America has gotten away from the religious foundation that it was originally based on. The end of the book offers evidence on how America has gotten away from its roots and has consequently suffered for it. While the book offers many other high points it is far from perfect. Many reviewers have noticed a great deal of errors in the book. The next edition will take care as he offers his address in the book so he can be notified for this very problem. This is not the only problem in Johnson's work though. While I do agree that Lincoln was one of our great presidents, I think Johnson is stretching the truth when he depicts Lincoln as the great abolitionist whose utmost priority was to free the slaves. There is plenty of evidence for the other side of that argument. Another problem I had was how Johnson devoted more time to Reagan's sense of humor than to the Civil Rights Movement. I understand that in covering 400 years some subjects must be given the short end of the stick but I do not think that should have been one of them. Overall, Johnson's book makes for an interesting read. From Jackson's inaugaration to Truman's years in office or JFK's presidential campaign against Nixon, Johnson enlightened me on several periods of my country's history.

A very thorough book, but not really a good book. History is meant to be factual and objective. Unfortunately, Mr Johnson's rightist views are not only extremely obvious to the reader, but he sometimes rambles like a demagogue. I prefer a history where the writer states the facts and information, and I decide for myself whether Reagan was a good president or whether FDR's New Deal really worked. And now after reading other reviews, I find that there are factual inaccuracies as well. But the book is informative, I gotta grant it that, and it covers US history pretty well. That's why the three stars.

If there is any book that is going to make me question every history book I will read from now is A History of The American People by Paul Johnson. I have to admit that when I enthusiastically picked up this book from my local bookstore, I had no idea who Paul Johnson was. If I did, I probably would have put it right back on the shelf. A warning from the publisher alerting us to the personal and reinterpretive nature of this book would have been nice. Better still a less misleading title like 'Gratifying reinterpretration of U.S. History for the staunchily conservative' would have been welcome.

Totally unprejudiced against this author since I didn't know who he was, I read on, stumbling on one innacuracy after the other until I put down the book and asked myself what the hell I was reading.( The first innacuracy I caught was Cotton Mather encouraging vaccination against smallpox 100 years before it was discovered (!) in 1796 by Edward Jenner, a compatriot of no less than Mr. Johnson!)

Although well written and entertaining, Mr. Johnson's brand of staunch conservatism permeates and severely clouds every historical fact he presents. His frequent references to 'contrary to what is popularly believed' and 'according to classified files' renders his book a monumental exercise in wasteful and unsubstantied prose.

Even though I had my doubts about Mr. Johnson political leanings all throughout his book, it wasn't until I hit his blistering attacks on FDR and Kennedy as well as his interpretation of the Vietnam war that I put the book down and looked up Mr. Johnson on the Internet.

And then it all became clear. I had been duped into reading this book thinking all along that it was a respectable 'partisan-free' history book. Still, I blame myself. The caption underneath the Reagans stating that they were one of the most formidable couples to hold court at the White House should have tipped it off. No sane semi-intelligent person would have had the nerve to make such a statement expect for the right-wing impaired.

Excuse me for being old-fashioned but I have always believed that history books are written by qualified scholars and not by highly-politicized former military personnel who have an axe to grind with the 'liberal' media.

Reader beware!
