For a New York City-freak like me, this is the perfect book: historical data broken down, processed and presented in maps, charts and graphs. Data that would be difficult to find anywhere, let alone understand easily, is here presented in the clearest possible way. Maps to compare the settlement of the city from 1664 and - say - 1703; a map of ethnic districts in 1920; a graph showing Beaux Arts-buildings on Park Avenue - you all find it in this book, and a lot more.

This book is virtually useless to a serious student of New York City. While it does have some nice features, such as the "Fortunes of Three New York Baseball Teams, 1903-1957" on p. 155, the are so many errors as to render it worthless. The worst example: p. 102 "City of Stores" map where all the stores on 6th Ave. & 23rd St. are shifted one block north of their correct locations and the labels for 2 of these stores (Stern's & Horner Furniture) are switched and two streets (University Place & 4th Ave) are mislabeled (4th Ave. & Bowery, respectively)! This is a waste of money.

Das Buch ist chronologisch aufgebaut (im Prinzip), wird aber dann immer Themenweise in Kapiteln zusammengefasst, z.B. "öffentliche Verkehrsmittel" oder "Brückenbau" oder "Kleindeutschland".
Dadurch bleibt das Buch sehr übersichtlich, und der Leser kann wählen, welche Kapitel er genauer lesen möchte, und welche ihn weniger interessieren.
Ich selber lese die Kapitel, die mich interessieren, genauer durch, bei anderen überfliege ich nur den Text und sehe mir die Bilder und deren Beschreibung an, weil ich mich für dieses spezielles Thema (z.B. Bürgerkrieg) nicht so interessiere.
Aber genau das ist bei diesem Buch möglich, dass man nur selektiv liest - und das finde ich toll!
Ein Kapitel umfasst meistens 2 bis 4 Seiten, und ist somit auch ideal für Bus oder Bahn...
Mein Fazit: Kaufen!
Dadurch bleibt das Buch sehr übersichtlich, und der Leser kann wählen, welche Kapitel er genauer lesen möchte, und welche ihn weniger interessieren.
