5.0 von 5 Sternen A Wonderful Read for All Occasions 13. Februar 2012
Von Lauren - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Since Anthologies are short stories, I really can't do an in-depth review on each one without ruining the whole plot. So, in honor of "short" stories, I am going to summarize my initial reaction to each story from In His Eyes in 5 words!

Surprise Surprise by Stacey Wallace Benefiel:
What a great Valentines date!

First Kiss or First Kill by C.K. Bryant:
Medicine Mix-up had me laughing.

Shattered by Ali Cross:
She better love him back.

Before by Jessie Harrell:
Who would turn down Eros?

The Qualm Before the Storm by Karen Amanda Hooper:
Just kidnap her and leave.

Unspeakable by S.R. Johannes:
Full of mystery, major cliffhanger!

In the Beginning by Katie Klein:
I want my own guardian!

A Chance Encounter by Cheri Lasota:
Where is this girl going?

Family Bonds by Heather McCorkle:
Definitely worth breaking the rules.

Getting Closer by Lisa Nowak:
A sensitive guy, how refreshing.

Precalculus by Cory Putman Oakes:
Math SHOULD be that exciting!

The Almost Assassin by Laura Pauling:
Who would taze a mime?

Mind Games by Susan Kaye Quinn:
Don't they believe in privacy?

By The Firelight by Elle Strauss:
Do NOT mess with Casey.

A Very Alien Valentine's Day by Magan Vernon:
Aliens have some serious class.

Aligned by RaShelle Workman:
Makes saving souls look easy.

So there they are, my initial reactions. I hope this sparks some curiosity as to exactly what these stories are about. What? Need more convincing? Fine. Since you asked so nicely, I will share my thoughts on this anthology as a whole. Ahem...

I have never been one to read anthologies; I think this is because I form an emotional attachment to the characters, and then BOOM they're gone. That said, this book is wonderful. As in, curl up on the couch, grab a cup of tea, and daydream about these guys after reading all their stories. All of the short stories are from the guys' POV. It's a very refreshing change from the normal, female protagonist approach. With all of these amazing guys, the biggest challenge is simply choosing your favorite crush! One thing that I really love about In His Eyes is that I still understand and connect with the short stories, deleted scenes, and prequels that are associated with books that I haven't read yet. Each of the authors does an amazing job of tying me to the characters and, when needed, providing background information to help set up the stories. All of these short stories are very well written and have a definite flow making them easy to read.

Another quality that makes this book so amazing is its diversity. All of these stories are YA fiction, but some of them are contemporary, some are paranormal, some are fantasy, a few are sci-fi, and I even classify one as historical. With all of these different genres, there is sure to be a perfect story for just about anyone's taste.

The cover:

Well lets see: this cover is steamy. Just look at the heart, it screams romance. I really love how the guy and girl are looking at one another through the heart in the mirror as they are leaning in for a kiss. They don't even seem to be aware of a mirror between them. So romantic. I hope they both get that kiss!

Basically, I absolutely LOVE In His Eyes and recommend it to anyone who loves YA, yummy guys, mystery, and a whole lot of romance!

I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Wish it had been clearer that this was an anthology of stories about 14-18 year old hero characters. Also mostly paranormal. It wasn't bad, just not my thing.

my mini review for By the Firelight by Elle Strauss...
Had I impressed her in the same way she'd blown my socks off?" Loved that sentence in the story.
I first fell in love with Nate in Clockwise back in November. But getting Nate's POV in By the Firelight (short story from anthology In His Eyes) was so much fun. He had a few snarky comments, that he kept to himself of course, in fear of getting his head knocked off by Casey. We get to see what he was feeling and thinking about his first time travel trip back to 1860, unlike in Clockwise. Nate is not sure if Casey is crazy, the guys are punkin' him, or if what's happening is really real. Poor guy! Little does he know this is only the beginning. Even though this was a short story, Strauss did a fabulous job! I was sad that it ended so quickly.

my mini review for Mind Games by Susan Quinn...
Mind Games is the prequel, from the anthology In His Eyes, based off the book Open Minds by Susan Kaye Quinn, which I absolutely adored. I loved Kira in Open Minds...but getting Raf's POV in Mind Games was a real treat. I really feel more for him than I originally did. In this short story Raf is battling the voices of his friends and classmates while struggling to find a way to ask Kira to the Gamesdance. But when Jessica, a girl interested in Raf, threatens to hurt Kira, Raf must decide if asking Kira is really worth it.
Quinn what are you doing to me? What a tease! Oh Raf, yeah I am in need of more of him. He is too sweet and too kind. This anthology was a fabulous idea to peek into the minds of the guys from some of our favorite stories. Great little short story. I adore you Quinn and cannot wait for Closed Hearts to be released.

Reading this anthology was fun! It was like speed dating - spending a few minutes with each story and deciding if you like the storyline, characters, the author's writing style and so forth, then deciding if you'd like to pursue it further. Wait. I've never done the speed dating thing, maybe there's some unpleasantness associated with that. Since it was completely enjoyable, let me find a better analogy. Okay, I've got one! It was like going to Baskin Robbins and trying 16 of their 31 flavors. Yeah, you might like some better than others, but THEY"RE ALL ICE CREAM . . . . . WINNING! Plus, you can have them all in one sitting if you want (why does everything lead to food, with me?).

If you've read any of the featured books from these authors, then you know their characters. You already know the basics, and yet there's still something new and interesting to learn about them. Also, a male perspective for the whole read, that's a bonus. Throw a romantic theme on top of that and you've got the recipe for an extra special Valentines Day treat! Who says no to that??

Like I mentioned earlier, some flavors stood out. The short stories (other than those associated with books I've already reviewed) that pulled me in and whispered, "Gotcha! You're mine. Read my book or you'll never sleep again" were: IN THE BEGINNING (The Guardian) by Katie Klein, PRECALCULUS (The Veil) by Cory Putman Oakes and MIND GAMES (Open Minds) by Susan Kaye Quinn. They get my AWESOME FIRST IMPRESSION Award. But, trust me, ALL the stories are good and piqued my interest. I'm sure I'll eventually get around to reading every book on the list. So, now it's your turn to check it out and see which ones end up making YOUR list of best first impressions.

I recommend this to everyone who enjoys reading YA, don't pass it up!

Read three storylines so far.

MIND GAMES by Susan K Quinn

MIND GAMES YA (Mindjack Trilogy Prequel) by Susan Kaye Quinn

MIND GAMES (found in the anthology In His Eyes) is the prequel short story to indie author Susan Kaye Quinn's new Mindjack Trilogy .

Background: Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can't read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can't be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves.

In a world of mindreaders, Kira is an anomaly. She has yet to enter the change and is unable to read the minds of her fellow students. But at the same time, her mind is a blank to anyone who dares to enter. To be forever branded as a zero is not the title Kira wants. As the end of the school year approaches, Kira is hoping that summer vacation will usher in some new changes in her life.

Raf Santos is one of the most popular guys in school. With the upcoming year end Gamesdance, Raf has only one girl in mind for his date, but the others have different plans that do not include Kira. When Raf's so called friends threaten to harm Kira, Raf will make a decision that could hurt Kira and destroy their fragile relationship that appears to be unraveling day by day. Once best friends with Kira, Raf will have to face the consequences of his actions, when Kira may no longer be a part of his life.

Mind Games in the introductory short story in Quinn's Mindjack Trilogy. An interesting concept that includes the ability to read minds, hear thoughts and the isolation of those who have yet to attain status in a world governed by the reality of truths. Without the ability to be read, the zeroes cannot be trusted-for fear they hold secrets. A concept based in prejudices and stereotypes, I look forward to reading Open Minds-Book 1 in the Mindjack Trilogy.

A VERY ALIEN VALENTINE'S DAY by Magan Vernon is a short story found in the anthology In His Eyes. As part of Magan's Alien Romance series, A Very Alien Valentine's Day is a sweet look at the confusion surrounding Ace's first Valentine's Day.

As a Caltian, Ace found the practice of Valentine's Day unnecessary and a bit overwhelming. To add to his dilemma, his best friend Monte claims that human girls expect a little something from their boyfriends on V-day, even if the boyfriend was from another planet. But Ace had no idea what was expected and his girlfriend Alex seemed resistant to the idea of celebrating Valentine's Day.

Like most females, Alex was hoping that Ace would remember the day for lovers, but she too, was not going to raise her expectations in case Ace wasn't willing to partake in the very human tradition of celebrating another useless holiday. But a cold February evening would prove that Alex's fears were fodder for the wind. To be loved as deeply and completely is the dream of every woman on this planet or the next.

A Very Alien Valentine's is a quick read, basically a chapter in length and a welcome addition to Magan's Alien Romance series. Change the alien scenario, and you will find yourself smiling at the very real dilemma of celebrating your first Valentine's Day with a lover or friend.

UNSPEAKABLE (YA) by S.R. Johannes

UNSPEAKABLE is the Young Adult short-story (found In His Eyes anthology) written by S.R. Johannes. The introduction to the Nature of Grace series, Unspeakable follows two lost souls as they wander the forests hoping to find something or someone, told from a different POV. The Nature of Grace series is told from the heroine's POV but Unspeakable looks at life from another's POV>

Written in first person POV, the reader follows through the eyes of the narrator while he walks the terrain of the forest and land. When he chances upon a wounded fawn caught in a trap, he soon realizes he may not be alone. Where there is a trap, the hunter is not too far behind.

But it is the sight of a beautiful young woman, wandering and taking note of the land, that captures his attention. When he returns the next day, hoping to find her again, he realizes the danger that she has quickly put herself in. Trapped by the hunters, the young woman soon becomes both prisoner and prey, and there must be something that he can do, to prevent the inevitable from happening.

Unspeakable is a quick read, basically a chapter in length that introduces some basic information about the Nature of Grace series. At this point, we are not privy to names or destinations, but as a prologue Unspeakable will leave you wanting for read what happens next.
