Hiking Alaska is comprehensive and user friendly.Hello hikers! What I set out to do with this hiking guidebook was to put together the most comprehensive, user-friendly guide to outdoor Alaska on the market. The book features 100 detailed descriptions of hikes all over the state, from week-long, strenuous backpack trips to easy day hikes on nature trails, suitable for families with kids. It includes sidebars with natural history, history and cultural tidbits of interest about the hikes. I'm told the maps, elevation profiles and "pick-a-hike" tables make the book easy to use at a glance. Craig Medred, outdoor editor at the Anchorage Daily News, the largest paper in the state, calls this the most user-friendly Alaska hiking guidebook.
A little about me: I wore out hiking boots all over the West before moving to Alaska in 1982, and since then have hiked, paddled and skied more than 5,000 miles in Alaska's wilderness. Trails have been a big part of my working life, from building trails with a pulaski to planning systems of trails, including several years as manager of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, the one the dogs run on every year in March. Besides outdoor topics, I write popular history and travel pieces. I support Alaska conservation and environmental education groups, and hope you will too. Thanks for your interest in my book; I hope it helps you enjoy the fantastic Alaska backcountry!
