In this fifth entry in Janet Evanovich's increasingly popular series, Stephanie's problems are many and varied. She's not making enough moneypicking up FTAs (Failures to Appear) for her cousin Vinnie, of Vincent PlumBail Bonds; her red-hot love affair with Detective Joe Morelli has cooled off; and her giant extended family is no help at all. For instance, Uncle Fred the cheapskate has disappeared, leaving behind some suspicious photographs of body parts in garbage bags and links to some really dangerous people.

When Stephanie turns to her friend and mentor, Ranger, for financial advice, he gets her involved in a gang of toughs doing instant evictions for landlords. (She complains to Ranger about the job and its dangers, prompting one of the hired thug to say, "Man, you don't like to get shot. You don't like to get arrested. You don't know how to have fun at all.")

Most of Stephanie's charm, of course, comes from her attitude--a combination of the brazen bravado that turns a failed lingerie model into bounty hunter in the first place and the normal fears of a person in over her head.

Durch einen Zufall war dies das erste Buch der Stephanie Plum Serie das ich gelesen habe und ich war absolut begeistert. Der Humor (zynisch - ironisch) und die skurilen Charaktere machen diese Serie zu einem absoluten Highlight bei den modernen amerikanischen Krimiautoren ... Der fünfte Band ist dabei einer der besten, wobei ich jedem empfehlen würde trotzdem bei Band 1 (One for the money) anzufangen. Die Fälle sind zwar in sich abgeschlossen, aber die übergeordnete Story (Familie, Freunde) wird trotzdem von Band zu Band weiter gesponnen. Wie gesagt für mich war dieser Band einer der Highlights der Serie ...

Jersey's favorite bounty hunter is back to solve yet another mystery. What has happened to her Uncle Fred? And why were pictures of a dead body among his possessions?

Once again Stephanie is out to get her man, this time her own uncle. With her stun-gun-toting grandma in tow, an angry little man and two very, very sexy men Stephanie has her work cut out for her. With high hair and an awsome manicure, Stephanie will be sure to nail this case. Highly recommended.

My kind of "comfort read"! 15. Juli 2000

Most readers define a "comfort read" as a book by an author who meets their expectations, time after time. Well, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series does exactly that for me -- I know, when I pick up one of the books in these series, that the characters are going to be simultaneously endearing and outrageous, that Stephanie's going to be the cause of something blowing up, and that I'm going to laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

Don't expect gritty realism from any of these books -- even though there's something so real about these whacko characters, you feel as if you know them (or would like to). This is sheer slapstick entertainment, but brilliantly executed slapstick. Ms. Evanvich's ability to interweave a thousand plot points and still keep everything straight is nothing short of phenomenal. But her real forte is her top-notch characterization. . .and those who've been keeping up with the series from the beginning can, I'm sure, see just how far some of these characters have come since the beginning. Even though she's impetuous as ever, Stephanie has grown since ONE FOR THE MONEY, as has her lover/nemesis, Joe Morelli. Keeping a concept fresh and the characters evolving and vital is no mean feat through a half-dozen books, but Ms. Evanovich seems to be doing just fine on that score, as far as this reader is concerned.

Now to see how long I can hold out before I get the hardback of HOT SIX.
