Pressestimmen

'Ann Cleeves deserves a lot more attention than she gets. Her plots are beautifully crafted; her characters are intense and deeply drawn. She's also a real mistress of setting, taking us right into the scene of the action. All of those qualities shine in Hidden Depths, one of her best ... Cleeves never lets up on the suspense in this very complex puzzle ... Hidden Depths is masterful storytelling' Globe and Mail 'Cleeves sets a good scene, this time in Northumberland during a heatwave, and she brings a large cast to life, shifting points of view between bereaved relatives, victims and suspects in a straightforward, satisfyingly traditional detective novel' Literary Review 'Physically, Vera Stanhope is more Nero Wolfe then VI Warshawski: one character, watching her get out of a chair, thanks that a crane might be in order. But although she is lonely, obsessed with her job and over-fond of a beer, Vera is one of the new fictional detectives who seems not only like a real person, but one capable of conducting a murder inquiry. Ann Cleeves brings the same skill to all her characterisations in this highly impressive story' Saturday Telegraph 'Ann Cleeves is another fine author with a strong, credible female protagonist ... Cleeves' particular skill is characterization. Her characters range from affluent students to a spoiled woman filled with diffused sexual yearning, from nurses to academics, from painfully doting parents to a group of middle-aged bird-watchers, all with their own secrets. It's a dark, interesting novel with considerable emotional force behind it' Spectator 'Hidden Depths is another classic, traditional crime novel in a contemporary setting by Ann Cleeves, winner of last year's Duncan Lawrie Dagger ... The story follows each of the main characters in turn, but it is fat, lonely Vera, awkward with her staff and unaware that they are frightened of her, who makes the biggest impression in this skilfully crafted mystery' Sunday Telegraph 'A nicely atmospheric read' Time Out 'Ann Cleeves improves with every book. Her previous novel, Raven Black, was a deserved winner of the prestigious Duncan Lawrie Dagger for best crime novel of 2006 ... Hidden Depths is a subtle, nuanced book and Cleeves draws her characters with care and compassion. The landscape of rural Northumberland is vividly evoked and Inspector Stanhope - overweight, fallible and driven by personal demons - is a terrific central character' Tribune 'Nobody does unsettling undercurrents better than Ann Cleeves' Val McDermid

Kurzbeschreibung

Hidden Depths is the third book in Ann Cleeves’ Vera Stanhope series – which is now a major ITV detective drama starring Brenda Blethyn, VERA.

A hot summer on the Northumberland coast and Julie Armstrong arrives home from a night out to find her son strangled, laid out in a bath of water and covered with wild flowers.

This stylized murder scene has Inspector Vera Stanhope intrigued. But then another body is discovered in a rock pool, the corpse again strewn with flowers. Vera must work quickly to find this killer who is making art out of death.

As local residents are forced to share their deepest, darkest secrets, the killer watches, waits and plans to prepare another beautiful, watery grave . . .

Also available in the Vera Stanhope series are The Crow Trap, Telling Tales, Silent Voices and The Glass Room. Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series (BBC television drama SHETLAND) contains five titles, of which Dead Water is the most recent.

Lesenswert!

I came to "Hidden Depths" from Ann Cleeves' Shetland Island series, which I admired very much for its intelligent and original story lines. "Hidden Depths" has a different setting, Northumberland, England, and a very different protagonist in Inspector Vera Stanhope. This essentially a dark drama peopled with a cast of unhappy, spiritually wounded or struggling characters in whose midst two murders are committed. The victims are both very young and unusually beautiful--one young male and one young woman. Inspector Stanhope, a woman with personal issues of her own (she's basically built like a rugby player), starts out on a procedural investigation that gradually sorts through suspects and their catalog of misdeeds to track down the killer who is about to add a third victim. This is a slow and basically intelligent reveal that respects the reader's intelligence.

If you are a fan of Reginald Hill, Ruth Rendall and/or Karin Fossum, you will most likely take kindly to "Hidden Depths". The story is largely about the characters and their problems and relationships. At the same time, author Cleeves works in some interesting sidebars such as birdwatching (a carryover from the Shetland Islands series) to very good effect. An excellent read and recommended.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another engaging procedural in the DI Vera Stanhope series 21. September 2011
Von Z Hayes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
This is my second Cleeves novel featuring DI Vera Stanhope, the first being Silent Voices, and I must admit that this series is becoming a firm favorite. DI Stanhope is razor-sharp and an astute judge of people, though she herself is not your typical heroine. Stanhope is not glamorous nor even charismatic, she is dumpy, overweight, and can judge people too harshly, yet her excellent deductive skills make up for these flaws as she goes about solving murder mysteries.

In Hidden Depths, Stanhope finds herself at a bit of a loss when faced with two murders with a similar modus operandi. Both victims were strangled before being placed in water and covered with flowers. The victims initially don't appear to be connected in any way, but with some determined digging, Stanhope, her capable assistant Joe Ashworth, and the rest of the investigative team do come up with a tenuous connection. As they work on the case, some startling discoveries are made, revealing human frailties and compulsions that result in tragic consequences.

Readers who like Karin Fossum's psychological Swedish procedurals might appreciate the DI Vera Stanhope series.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I am totally hooked on Vera 22. Juli 2014
Von jax - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I watched " Vera" on PBS and felt her character was one that I needed to explore. I had a hard time gathering up the books in the series but Amazon came through and I was greatly rewarded. Vera is one of the more interesting characters I have met in mysteries in recent years. I feared that the book and the TV series would be too redundant and I would not enjoy the read but nothing was further from the truth. I highly recommend the series and they should be read in order.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Vera is at it again 16. Mai 2015
Von Judith Lautner - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Number 3 in the Vera Stanhope series. I am spacing them out, making myself read other books in between, so I can savor each one by itself.

A young man is found dead in his bathtub, by his mother. Flowers are spread decoratively on the water. Not long after, a beautiful young woman is found dead in a rock pool, also strewn with flowers. There has to be a connection but what is it?

Inspector Vera Stanhope and her young acolyte, Sgt. Ashworth, begin by investigating the group of friends who found the second body. They then branch out to friends and family of the second victim and find oh so many possibilities.

As always, I enjoyed Vera's rough yet fundamentally caring personality, her sharp wit and enjoyment of attention. She's a force. It has occurred to me that there are fictional male detectives with some characteristics similar to Vera's but I can't think of any other fictional females like her.
