Amazon.com

Darryl Billups calls Baltimore "the world's biggest country town," and he's drawn to it like a magnet. He gained sensational success as a crime reporter for the (fictional) Baltimore Herald, where he exposed the neo-Nazi who tried to blow up the NAACP headquarters, an event chronicled in Up Jumped the Devil. Following this stint, Billups tried his luck as a reporter in New York. But the offer of a management job at the Herald and a $15,000 raise has brought him back to Baltimore, where he remains the hottest thing to hit that town since the Homicide television series.

Darryl's hopes for a quiet life are disturbed when someone begins killing people--all young, all African American, all upwardly mobile--and decorating their faces with decals of the Confederate flag. The tough old police detective who worked with him on the NAACP bombing case lets Darryl break the story to the country. Meanwhile, the killer--(who incidentally gets turned on by Jerry Springer)--gradually emerges from the shadows complete with a catalog of frightening surprises. The author knows his Baltimore, and he knows the inner-workings of a journalist's mind. He makes Darryl a most human and very interesting kind of hero. --Dick Adler

From Booklist

If the secret to a successful series is a standout protagonist, Walker is off to a great start. Journalist Darryl Billups, starring here in his second adventure, is smart, funny, hip, and unforgettable. His self-deprecating humor and his love for his girlfriend and her young son endear him to the reader immediately. A former reporter for the Baltimore Herald, Billups gains an editorial position after helping police on a high-profile case. Now his friend, Detective Philip Gardner, calls him in on a case featuring a serial killer who murders thirtysomething black professionals and marks their faces with a decal of the Confederate flag. Soon Billups, who fits the victims' profile, has become a target himself. One of Walker's great strengths is his handling of the race issue in the context of the story. Billups points out the inequities he and others suffer because of their race with frustration and forthrightness, but he never climbs on a soapbox to do so. This suspenseful, rich mystery will have readers impatient for the next installment. Jenny McLarin

This is the first time reading Mr. Walker's novels, but one thing for sure, I'm definetly hooked. I found myself laughing out loud and sometimes saying "oh uh uh". And once starting "HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW" I didn't and couldn't put it down. A easy read but, also very tantalizing.

Mr. Walker's writing is refreshing after reading about "she did me wrong, or he aint' about nothing books". Can't hardly wait for the next book!

Only read this book if U want to be entertained! Blair Walker did a masterful job with the hero Darryl Billups and a newspaper reporter---turned sleuth role. We can identify with the realness of his character and how he deals with his lady, her son, and her crazy sister. He takes his time, showing us a peak at the murder in different stages of schizophrenia. Mabye you won't be fooled by the the ohvious ploys to take you off the scent of the real killer but you would never imagine the method used and why it works! This is a fun book with plenty of action, sex, and intriguing characters. I read it and decided I MUST read the first one and any others as soon as they come off the presses!

A real treat 2. April 1999

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
After solving a case involving Neo-Nazis, Baltimore Herald journalist Daryl Billups is quickly rising to the top of his profession. The paper has given the African-American crime reporter a promotion and a hefty raise, and he has become a local TV star.

Daryl reports on a serial killer whose African-American victims are found with decals of confederate flags all over their face. While most individuals quickly assume these are hate crimes, Daryl wonders if there might be a different motive to the murders. However, as Daryl begins his own inquiries, the killer hones in on the reporter, planning to add him to his rising count of murders.

HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW, the second Daryl Billups mystery (see the delightful UP JUMPED THE DEVIL), is a very entertaining who-done-it. The story line requires some acceptance of the seemingly impossible. For instance, the instant "beaming" of Daryl from Baltimore to an Atlanta crime scene occurs faster than anyone could have even cleared Hartsfield's waiting area. However, those few instances fail to take away from the fast-paced, fast-paced, and enjoyable plot. Daryl remains a fabulous hero. The secondary players, especially the city of Baltimore, imbue the novel with a special warmth and depth. With novels like this one, Blair S. Walker will not remain hidden in plain view of the local bookstore.

Women seldom accept the shorthand. Life has to be recorded in minute detail on a continuous audio/video loop, then played backblow by blowat a moments notice. But most important, you must discuss how you felt about your day, how it affected you emotionally. Translation: How was your day? is really an effort to get an emotional snapshot. "e;
