A member of the core Hibernate developer team,"Christian Bauer" also maintains the Hibernate documentation and website. He is a senior software engineer in Frankfurt, Germany. Hibernate founder "Gavin King" is an enthusiastic proponent of agile development, open source software and lightweight Java frameworks. He is a J2EE consultant based in Melbourne, Australia.

Hibernate ist derzeit das vielleicht beste O/R-mapping Framework für java. Es wird von meinem Unternehmen inzwischen in mehreren Projekten für große Logistikkonzerne und Finanzdienstleister eingesetzt. ...und erspart hier viel, viel Zeit bei der Realisierung der Datenbankschicht.
Das Buch Hibernate in Action ist nun eine optimale Info-Quelle für alle diejenigen, die nicht nur ein kleines Beispielprogramm mit Hibernate zum Laufen bringen wollen... darfür reicht die online-Doku. Vielmehr führt das Buch auch übersichtlich in die grundsätzliche Problematik des Mappings von (Java-)Objekten auf Relationen von Datenbanken ein und erläutert auch präzise die Paradigmen hinter den Eingeweiden von hibernate, so z.B. die unterschiedlichen Cache-Strategien.
Alles in allem: eine gelungene Einführung in die Problematik des O/R-Mappings und gleichzeitig der beste Weg, um die Funktionsweisen von Hibernate gründlich kennen- und einsetzen zu lernen.

Dieses Buch vermittelt auf anschauliche Weise fast alle Features von Hibernate, die für die Entwicklung auch umfangreicher Programme notwendig sind. Die Autoren verstehen es, die Dinge klar, kurz und verständlich auf den Punkt zu bringen. 'Hibernate: A Developer's Notebook' ist die passende Ergänzung zu diesem Buch, weil es beispielsweise die Projektentwicklung mit Ant detailliert beschreibt.

Some books become the bible of their respective field, and that's about the expectation level for this book, coming from one of the Hibernate core developers. Well, at least my expectations were met by the book. After having read "Hibernate: A Developer's Notebook" (which is most suitable as a quick introduction) and the Hibernate reference documentation (twice), Hibernate in Action still contains lots of material that I didn't know or didn't understand on that level.
What I most like about book, and didn't find anywhere else, are the constant design hints: use feature A with care, and only under these conditions - feature B is a sensible default to start with - here, option C will be the most common, while option D is intended for rare, execeptional circumstances... etc. - it really gives you some good orientation, where other technical books just list the features one after the other. I hope more technical authors copy this style.
If I had to name one critizism, it would be sometimes there is a slight undertone of defensiveness / propaganda about some features, which isn't called for. This will go on some people's nerves; personally, I didn't mind.
All in all, if you're serious about developing with Hibernate, you really should get this book - I can't think of any good reason not to ;-) .
(Note: I've read an ebook-version, so I can't comment on the layout etc.)
