"Highly recommended!"
- Rachel E. Veres, www.cybermodeler.com

"A flavor of the aircraft, pilots and tactics used in World War II duels over the Pacific...a detailed look at one unit, Fighter Squadron Nine (VF-9), that flew Wildcats against the Vichy French in North Africa and then, equipped with F6F Hellcats, became a scourge in the Pacific, claim- ing 250 Japanese aircraft, resulting in 20 VF-9 aces." --Seapower Magazine

"In this latest book on aces from Osprey, we get a look at the history of VF-9, their conversion to the Hellcat and a look at all of the various actions in which the unit was involved during their three combat cruises; two of which were with the Hellcat. The book is full of pilot photos and some great stories, the sort of things that make this series so popular. Add to it a goodly selection of full color profiles and you have a book that makes for a great read and reference. Pick yours up today."

Good portrait of a glorious USN unit 19. Oktober 2014
Von Marco De Montis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
The 119th OSPREY’s “Aircraft of the Aces” title is dedicated to the US Navy’s VF-9 pilots.
This unit was a typical WW II US Navy squadron: established in March 1942 with only five obsolete F2A BUFFALO, saw combat with the F4F WILDCAT embarked on USS RANGER in North Africa, as part of operation “Torch”.
Author Edward M. Young, a well-known writer specialized in US Navy aviation, analyzes all the combat record of the VF-9, underlining the exceptional qualities of its pilots, since the first fighting at the controls of the WILDCAT.
Immediately after this positive beginning US Navy admirals decided to make it the first equipped with the sturdy and deadly F6F HELLCAT fighter: since August 1943 the pilots of the VF-9’s F6Fs operating from the deck of USS ESSEX demonstrated a deadly and devastating effectiveness against the once fearful Mitsubishi ZERO. During these first duels the young and brave American pilots downed more than 120 Japanese in few months.
Among the aces emerging from this theatre (Wake, Rabaul and Marcus Island) Lt. Hamilton McWhorter was the most famous. Then the Tarawa, Kwajalein and Truk campaigns demonstrated how the VF-9 sqn. was one of the most valued US Navy unit. During the Okinawa invasion (March-June 1945) the legend of Eugene Valencia was born: this excellent pilot downed 23 enemy planes, ever at the stick of the F6F and also perfected the famous “Finger Four” formation in such a way to make his combat division reach the impressive total of 43 victories.
This was the conspicuous result of a perfect integration between the powerful and sturdy HELLCAT and its brave men at the controls: testifying this, the whole VF-9’s combat record at the end of the war reached the astonishing value of 250 victories and 20 aces!
The beautiful Jim Laurier’s profiles draw the US Navy camouflage evolution through the years, and make a valid tribute to a very interesting book on one of the most important period for US Navy aviation.

Hellcat Pilots in Action! 26. März 2014
Von Michael OConnor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Fighter Squadron Nine was one of the U. S. Navy's top units in World War II. Flying Wildcats and then Hellcats, the squadron ended the war as the #2 top-scoring USN squadron and was one of the very few VF units to score kills against two Axis nations, Vichy France and Japan. Edward Young chronicles the combat ops flown by VF-9 in its three combat cruises in F6F HELLCAT ACES OF VF-9. A 2014 Osprey release, Young's book is #119 in their AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series.

Estabished in March 1942 VF-9 saw combat in Operation Torch, the invasion of French Morocco. Flying off USS Ranger, the unit bagged six Vichy French kills with their F4Fs. In January 1943, the unit transitioned to Hellcats and deployed to the Pacific on board USS Essex. Their second cruise, from August 1943 to March 1944, saw hard-fought combats over Rabaul, Tarawa, Truk and Saipan which netted the squadron 120 kills. Ten aces were crowned including Ham McWhorter, the first Hellcat ace/double-ace.of the war, Gene Valencia and Mayo Hadden. The last combat cruise from February to June 1945 produced 128 kills scored in combats over the Home Islands and Okinawa.Ten more pilots become aces including James French, Marv Franger and Bert Eckard. Gene Valencia ran his score to 23, making him the second-highest scoring F6F ace. By war's end, VF-9 was the second-highest scoring Hellcat squadron with 257 victories.

Young does a good job of relating VF-9's combats, the exciting text incorporating many combat reports and reminiscences. The book includes numerous photographs of VF-9 aircraft and aircrew, various carriers, gun-camera pix, etc. along with Jim Laurier's always excellent color profiles.

Fighter combat buffs will enjoy Young's tribute to this exemplary fighter squadron. Recommended.

*****
I wonder why Osprey ran Young's book in the AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series rather than their AVIATION ELITE UNITS series like they did with Barrett Tillman's SUNDOWNERS volume. Just curious.

Review #2,050!

ANCHORS ALOFT! 17. April 2014
Von KOMET - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Osprey has once again produced a high quality book about an outstanding fighter unit of the Second World War. In this case, it is VF-9, a U.S. Navy fighter unit, which was activated in March 1942 as part of the Navy's expansion of its naval aviation arm in the immediate aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack. VF-9 took part in 3 fighter cruises during its wartime service. In its first fighter cruise, VF-9 was equipped with the F4F Wildcat fighter and took part in Operation Torch, the Anglo-American invasion of North Africa in November 1942, operating from the aircraft carrier USS Ranger.

After seeing limited action against elements of the Vichy French air force, VF-9 returned to the U.S., where it was re-equipped with the Navy's newest fighter, the F6F Hellcat, which was to prove itself more than capable of taking on the best of both the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) and the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) air arm. VF-9 trained extensively on the Hellcat, which it used so effectively against Japan during the American offensives in the Central Pacific (1944), attacks on the Japanese home islands (February 1945), and during the Battle of Okinawa. By war's end, VF-9 was credited with shooting down 250 enemy planes and produced 20 aces.

On the whole, this is a fantastic book, replete with a dazzling array of photos and illustrations.

LOVE THIS BOOK!!! 16. April 2014
Von Mike - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves naval aviation history. As the grandson of one of the ace pilots of VF-9 it was great reading about my grandfather’s experiences and battles that he fought in North Africa and in the Pacific. After conducting many years of research on my grandfather I thought I had learned just about everything about him but I was wrong. This book has brought me new insight into his career in the Navy and I’m glad that someone finally wrote a book about Fighting Squadron Nine. This is a must read!

Great airplane, excellent young pilots. Patriots all as compared to todays "me me me" lightweights. Damn, they sure were the "Greatest Generation". Can you just imagine them voting for the nincompoops running the the country today. God Bless America. Joan Carr
