The stories here are from 2003-8 and 2010-11, and were originally collected in paperback as `The Crooked Man' and `The Troll Witch'. There is the usual gallery of sketches and variant covers.
This volume appears to be marking time in the Hellboy saga. The stories are mainly short, unconnected ones. The longest is The Crooked man, at 72 pages. This represents the period when the author was working on the Hellboy film, and launching the B.P.R.D. ongoing series - see B.P.R.D.: Plague of Frogs Hardcover Collection Volume 1, and so didn't have time to devote to moving the character forward. We also see here other artists and writers taking on Hellboy; Richard Corben and P. Craig Russell being two of them. The Introduction and Afterword refer to reprinting the next major story - The Island - in volumes 5 and 6, so we have a big step to look forward to in the future. However, this is still another excellent volume in this series.

good but not enough

Compared tot he first three volumes, this fourth volume is quite disappointing :(
I thought the story of "strange places" would continue and have an interesting plot,
but it was quite the contrary, I would not recommend this volume unless you want to read a lot of short-stories of Hellboy, some of them pointless and lacking of a good plot.
Still if you're a collector like me, the edition is going to shine at your bookshelf.

...then you probably already know what to expect from Mike Mignola, and he doesn't disappoint. The Troll King and The Crooked Man are dark, mature modern reinterpretations of mixed myths and represent Mignola at the pinnacle of his ability. The art style is a bit different than fans may be used to (I think this is the first Library Edition with another illustrator), however, it still maintains the flow and atmosphere to fit the story. The book itself, like the previous three, is gorgeous and well-constructed with cloth-bound covers - I wish my Absolute Editions of the Sandman series were produced to the same specs. Highly recommended!
