The best of the series so far! 6. August 2013
Von Cozy Reader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Rhys Bowen's historical mysteries, Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, are some of my very favorite historical mysteries. They are sweet and sassy, smart and thrilling. The latest in the series, Heirs and Graces, tops off the series with amateur sleuth, Lady Georgiana Rannoch, yet again in the middle of a murder scene!

Lady Georgiana is bored in the city and unable to bear the thought of visiting her brother at his Scottish castle (which is far too drafty with an unbearable sister-in-law included). The perfect opportunity to leave the city comes when Her Majesty the Queen asks Georgiana to help the dowager duchess groom a new heir - a heir that has been discovered in Outback Australia. As Georgiana tries to show Jack Altringham proper table manners, the dowager duchess's son looks on in disgust. When her son, Cedric, shows up with a knife in his back, everyone points their finger at Jack as the murderer. It is going to take a lot of help from Georgiana and her dearest Darcy to keep Jack out of the gallows!

I am a diehard Agatha Christie fan. I love my english cozies and I'm also Australian by birth. Heirs and Graces comes very close to being the most absolutely perfect cozy mystery that I've ever read. In fact page after page I almost felt like it was written just for me. It had a thrilling mystery and a fantastic returning cast. In the previous books I've always enjoyed reading about Georgiana's best friend, Belinda's exploits, as she does all she can to snag a rich man, without actually marrying him. Belinda and Queenie, Georgiana's maid, are back with lots of laughs and giggles. However it was Jack Altringham who completely stole the show. From his lack of table manners to his inability to fit into the royal ways (and not wanting to fit in) he was a perfect addition to this great cast. His aussie slang was spot on and he made a already fantastic mystery series even better!!

With a few stolen romantic moments between Georgiana and Darcy (isn't that the most perfect male name ever?), a compelling mystery and a English country setting, Heirs and Graces was a dynamite read and one that I strongly recommend be on your summer reading list.

Not really up to what I expect from Ms Bowen 15. August 2013
Von vacuum_girl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This book began with good promise of a nice, juicy manor house mystery. Then it just sort of petered out as if the author ran out of ideas in fleshing out the plot. Lady Georgiana, the main character, was invited to spend time at a lovely manor house teaching the newly discovered heir to the manor the ins and outs of etiquette and behavior expected of a Duke. She spends barely any time with Jack, the future Duke. She soon discovers the murdered body of the current-and-now-ex-Duke and spends the rest of the story gathering clues and passing them off to the police inspector in charge of the investigation. The supporting characters who usually appear in the Royal Spyness Mysteries make their short and uneventful appearances, as if they were an after thought. And the ending really didn't seem to suit the plot at all. Even with these detractions, I would have found this a good, fluffy mystery if the relationship between Jack and Georgiana had included more substance and a bit of light hearted comedy. Perhaps even a bit of rivalry for Georgiana's affections between Jack and her current beau, Darcy. Unexplained results of a séance are just left behind as if they were never mentioned. Even the discovery of a secret passage goes by the wayside. As it is, this installment to the series seemed to me to be an interesting beginning to a knitting project left unraveled and unfinished.

Ah, well....In the dedication, the author mentions falling and breaking her hip. Perhaps Ms Bowen was just not feeling well. I will look for the next installment and am really hoping for a return to the pleasant twists and turns of a well plotted and fleshed out mystery with the gentle humor and intelligence I have come to expect from a Rhys Bowen mystery.

A wonderful romp with an unexpected twist 7. August 2013

Fans of Rhys Bowen's Lady Georgiana Rannock will delight in devouring this latest in the series. All your favorites are on scene as Lady Georgie reasons her way through the latest bizarre murder, this time set at a lovely English country estate. And to Georgie's delight, there is plenty of delicious food and even better, her even more delicious beau, Darcy. New characters are well developed and believable. Descriptions of the palatial home and grounds take you there. Ms. Bowen is at her best and her gift for a humorous turn of phrase provides a welcome laugh at unexpected times. My only complaint is it will be SUCH a long wait until the next installment. Bravo, Ms. Bowen!

Top Pick! - 4.5 Stars 7. August 2013
Von Smitten by Books - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

For fans of: J. J. Murphy

March, 1934. As the daughter of a duke, it's essentially Lady Georgiana Rannoch's job to find a suitable husband and get married; after all, she has no home, no money of her own, and no real means of earning a living. She's spent the past month in Chelsea helping her mother write her memoir, but now that that adventure is over, she must either return to drafty old Castle Rannoch to live with her brother Binky and his odious wife Fig, or find some other means of supporting herself. She simply can't bear the thought of spending spring in Scotland with her penny-pinching sister-in-law, so she crosses her fingers and writes a letter to her cousin, the Queen, seeking assistance.

Georgie assumes Her Majesty will dispatch her to a remote country estate where she'll be forced to serve as lady-in-waiting for an elderly royal relative. Much to her surprise, though, she's instead sent to luxurious Kingsdowne Place and tasked with helping Edwina, Duchess of Eynsford, educate her Australian grandson Jack in the ways of the British aristocracy. At first, Georgie's delighted with her assignment; upon arriving at Kingsdowne Place, however, she discovers that not only does Jack have no interest in being the future Duke of Eynsford, but that nobody except Edwina - including the current duke, Edwina's unmarried son Cedric - welcomes his presence. Tensions mount, arguments ensue, and Cedric winds up dead, Jack's knife in his back. But is the new Duke of Eynsford truly to blame for killing the old one, or is someone just trying to make it look that way?

Heirs and Graces is the seventh installment in Rhys Bowen's utterly fabulous Royal Spyness Mystery series. It's Agatha Christie meets P.G. Wodehouse with a dash of Downton Abbey thrown in for good measure, and it's every bit as extraordinary as its predecessors. This book grabs you with the very first sentence and then staunchly refuses to let go. The prose is graceful yet spirited. The narrative drive is strong. The mystery is clever, complex, and is destined to keep you guessing thanks to its wealth of clever clues and viable suspects. And Bowen does a spectacular job transporting readers to 1930s Britain; her descriptions of manor-house life are vivid, and her writing has a remarkable sense of time and place.

Bowen's character work is among the best in the genre. The perfect blend of proper and impertinent, Georgie is a marvelous heroine for whom you can't help but root. Fiancé and partner-in-crime Darcy is not only a great love interest, but a compelling character in his own right. Georgie's flighty actress mother, man-eating best friend, and utterly incompetent maid provide regular doses of comic relief. And murder victim Cedric is so callous and self-absorbed, you'll be rooting for his death from the moment you make his acquaintance.

If you're a fan of mysteries, love historical fiction, or just like good books, give Heirs and Graces by Rhys Bowen a try; I've yet to read a book of Bowen's that I didn't completely and totally adore, and I, for one, can't wait to see what Georgie gets up to next.

Meh, just ok, my least favorite in the series so far 13. August 2013
Von A. Ayubi - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I was looking forward to a new book in the series that I enjoy so much, but I have to say that this one was a big let down. It just felt like a filler book in the series that was done to fit a deadline or something. It wasn't terrible, but it felt like it just sort of checked all the boxes without much excitement to it. All the characters we like showed up at some point, but most without a real purpose. I've always enjoyed Darcy as a character, but even he irritated me here...it started in the last book, but here again, he sort of tries to slow Georgianna down, not really believing in her getting involved in the case, although she has clearly shown that she's pretty good at figuring things out. Their "love" story is more of a "lust" story from his side...it would be nice to get a little deeper emotions, not just making out here and there. The overall storyline was just sort of stagnant, I guess we'll see if there is something more exciting happening in the next one.
