Kurzbeschreibung

Eight years ago, Allie Hathaway scandalized the wealthy elite of Chicago when she ran away to San Francisco. Now a world-renowned portrait painter, her life is filled with laughter and friendship, including being a mother to her orphaned niece. Life is perfect, so why can’t she forget her first love?
Thomas Bradford has come a long way from being the Hathaway family’s carriage boy. A veterinary degree, ambition and hard work have made him one of Chicago’s most sought-after bachelors. If only he could forget those stolen moments with Allie, Thomas might be able to enjoy his success.
The Great Quake of 1906 stuns the nation and Allie’s art studio burns to the ground, destroying years of valuable work. She’s forced to return to Chicago with little Janey, the only spark of hope in a life reduced to ashes. Her faith is crushed by her tragic reversal of fortune.
Thomas knows better than to fall for the beautiful young painter again, but he’s never been very wise around Allie Hathaway.
The carriage man’s son is all grown up and Allie doesn’t expect a second chance at a love that was refused eight years ago. Her life is in shambles and she has a child to support, so why won’t her heart accept the truth?
Once their love was torn apart by circumstance, but Thomas and Allie must decide whether to forge a future of hope together.

This is the first book in the Colors of Faith, a Christian historical romance series by Virginia Carmichael. The next, Purple Like the West, will be released in September 2013. Virginia also writes under the name Mary Jane Hathaway.

Virginia was born near the Rocky Mountains and although she has traveled around the world, the wilds of Colorado run in her veins. A big fan of the wide open sky and all four seasons, she believes in embracing the small moments of everyday life. A home schooling mom of six young children who rarely wear shoes, those moments usually involve a lot of noise, a lot of mess, or a whole bunch of warm cookies. Virginia holds degrees in Linguistics and Religious Studies from the University of Oregon. She lives with her habanero-eating husband, Crusberto, who is her polar opposite in all things except faith. They've learned to speak in short-hand code and look forward to the day they can actually finish a sentence. In the meantime, Virginia thanks God for the laughter and abundance of hugs that fill her day as she plots her next book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Did Not Expect This Great Book 22. Februar 2013
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was just a great read. It kept me hopeful, engaged, and I couldn't wait for my next break at work to keep reading along. Your heart breaks for Allie as she faces one struggle after another. Not frustratingly so, but just life. Her faith takes a beating, and she wonders where God is in it all. Thomas loved Allie before she moved away and had to return because of her ailing health. He is frustrated that he still loves her, and worries that as soon as she's well, she'll just pack up and leave again. The heartache they've caused each other in the past, and the beautiful path they make to restore their relationship is so sweet, so beautiful. You also can't help falling in love with Allie's charge, her young niece. Nor the housekeeper who just dotes on Allie. I could actually picture every character, every scene. The author wrote things out so that they came alive, without using so much description that you wanted to skip the paragraphs. Trust me, if you like Christian Romance, I'd say this book is for you.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved it! 12. Februar 2013
Von Ellen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I had read "Season of Joy" and loved it so was excited to see another book by the same author. It did not disappoint. In fact, it's hard for me to decide which was my favorite. I'm pretty new to this Kindle thing (I'm a traditionalist, I admit it freely), but am hooked--I plan on buying this later even though I got it for free. Wonderful character development and scene setting. I found it very easy to believe this was a real story. Good job of researching the time period and the historical details of the great earthquake. Looking forward to the next book by Virginia Carmichael!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Christian Historical Romance 3. September 2013
Von Kerry Harland - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Well written book, though there were a few editing errors. Normally I can't tolerate those errors; but I was able to get past these minor ones and finish the book. I liked that the author was able to make all the characters come alive. Although predictable, I liked that the heroine insisted on keeping her niece and raising the young girl with a gentler hand than her own stern mother would have done had she taken over the little one's care. I would have liked it more had the author been able to give the heroine a stronger voice to stand up to her seemingly overbearing mother. She was so strong in other ways. It would have just followed better, I think. I like that, this being a Christian novel, there weren't the all-to-numerous light porn scenes every other paragraph in modern romances.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A Refreshing Christian Romance 17. September 2013
Von Laura Pearl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Okay, before I get started here, let me just begin by saying that I've never been a big fan of the "romance" genre; in fact, just giving a book that tag tends to prejudice me against it at the outset. Knowing this about me, you might be surprised to learn how very much I enjoyed reading Virginia Carmichael's delightful novel All the Blue of Heaven, since it would certainly fall into that category. (To tell you the truth, it surprised me a bit, too!) This is a wholesome, refreshing, and satisfying book, and I'm glad I decided to give it a fair trial.

The story begins in 1906, just after the famous earthquake that devastated the city of San Francisco. Years earlier, beautiful young Alberta ("Allie") Hathaway had fled to that West Coast artists' haven from her Chicago-area home, in order to pursue her dream of becoming a painter.

A gal who is more modern-thinking than many of her late Victorian-era contemporaries, Allie is fiercely determined to use her God-given artistic talent to its best advantage. When she leaves home to head out to San Francisco, she goes against the wishes of her disapproving mother, who wants her to stay and secure a traditional future. She also leaves behind--and loses--her first love and true soul mate, Thomas Bradford, her mother's stable boy. She manages to achieve much critical and financial success in the art world--and she does this during an era when a woman of her class was expected to eschew career aspirations, find a suitable husband (a gentleman, not a stable boy) to provide for her, settle down with him, and spend her days raising children.

This beautiful book is pro-feminist, but in the truest Christian interpretation of the term. It extols the idea that women are the equals of men, and as such deserve the right to vote, to make important decisions, and to pursue careers that interest them; but it also spotlights the nurturing side of women, an inborn trait that makes them uniquely qualified to be mothers. Allie Hathaway has never married and hasn't given birth to babies of her own; but when she becomes the legal guardian of her orphaned niece, Janey, she truly grows a mother's heart.

Allie and Thomas lose touch over the years while she is away making her mark as a painter, but they never forget one another. And when Allie returns home a broken woman, having suffered injury and loss in a horrific fire that occurs in the aftermath of the San Francisco quake, their dormant--though not dead--love begins to blossom once again. Thomas is now a successful, self-made man, and it would appear that there is nothing stopping the couple from having the "happily ever after" ending to their story that both seem to desperately want (and Janey desperately needs). But human hearts are so complicated, and so prone to miscommunication and misunderstanding, that it is unsure if they will ever see eye-to-eye on whether or not they can build a future together.

I don't want to give away the ending, so I'll just wrap this up by saying that All the Blue of Heaven is like a breath of fresh air. This touching novel is a romance in the best possible sense: Carmichael exposes the feelings of love and passion between her two well-developed main characters in a way that rings true, but without resorting to blush-inducing scenes of physical intimacy that are inappropriate for a reader of any age. I was especially impressed by her portrayal of Thomas, who is at once a normal, full-blooded young man and a faith-filled, respectful suitor. His active prayer life is always in evidence; he has a deep and abiding faith in God, and he works gently but tirelessly to help Allie rediscover hers. Although this is technically not a Catholic novel, it is profoundly Christian, and the virtues and morals taught by the Catholic Church are quietly promoted throughout the story.

Carmichael's writing style is very attractive, her plot is compelling, and her character development (even when it comes to the minor players) is excellent. If it had been more carefully copy-edited and formatted, All the Blue of Heaven would be a top-notch work of fiction; however, there are typos and errors throughout the book, and I found them somewhat distracting. Even so, when I read it I couldn't wait to see what happened next, and I couldn't help but root for the likable heroine and her dashing hero to end up together. Despite the scattered instances of sub-par editing, in my opinion this is a book that deserves an audience.

(This review will also appear on CatholicFiction.net.)

Postscript: During some recent correspondence with author Virginia Carmichael, in which I expressed my concerns about the book's editing, I learned that the author was already aware of the problem. In fact, All the Blue of Heaven is currently in the process of being professionally re-edited and re-formatted, and I am pleased to report that a new and improved edition will be available in the near future. Be on the look-out for it!

It is very nice to find romances that are clean. This one is very Christian and clean. I liked it a lot. I've added Virginia Carmichael to my good author's list.
