Kurzbeschreibung

25. Januar 2012
All Johnny Burns ever wanted was to be in a band. When he and his best friend Tom Watson founded Heartbreaker, they realised their wildest dreams a hundred times over. When Alex Weston is hired to ghostwrite a book about the life of Johnny Burns and his band - from playing down-and-dirty pubs and clubs in the sixties, through the excesses of seventies stadium rock to eighties meltdown - even she isn't prepared for the depths of excess, betrayal and guilt that she uncovers. At the heart of the Heartbreaker story lies the tragic deaths of two members of a band at the very summit of its success - deaths wrapped in a web of secrets and lies. As Alex sets out to learn more and digs deeper into the past, she is forced to realise that she may have to confront Johnny's part in the devastating events of all those years ago

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Great Trip for Rock Music and Mystery Fans 17. Oktober 2011
Von Sean Patrick Reardon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm all about Rock-n-Roll and this novel more than met the high expectations I had going in. Although Heartbreaker is a fictional band, it didn't take long for the author to have me thinking they were real. And when I finished, I was wishing I could go out an buy their CD's. The transitions from the interview style passages to flashback scenes were handled superbly. Along with being an excellent chronology of blues based RnR, there are a few nice subplots, as well as a damn good mystery that runs throughout and kept me guessing until the end. This was an excellent introspection into the behind the scenes world of all that is real rock n roll...the good, the bad, and the ugly. I Could easily see this novel being used in the classroom for courses related to post 1960's rock music history. Just like getting a bonus track on a CD, there is an excellent short included at the end titled "Shadow Man" which in itself, would have been worth the price of admission. The overall presentation and editing were flawless. Highly recommend this to both music and mystery fans.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Julie's Got Ticks 19. Oktober 2011
Von A. J. Hayes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, if you're read Julie Morrigan's stuff before, you already know rule number one. Rule number one is pay attention to those little ticks. You know, you're reading along, happy and clam-like, thinking, what a nifty tale of rock and roll, drugs and the wild boys of music. You mind is filled with images, dynamic pictures of the band taking the stage. Strobes, rising applause, swirling lights, the hard lifestyle of Rock Gods . . .tick . . . the curtain rising, the show begins.

Wait a minute. What was that, that . . . thing . . . back there buried in the pictures? What was that? Huh?

Or, again: Julie is in full stride, pointing out the sights of the small village and the comfortable old pub/inn where Alex is staying and how it's . . . tick . . . a place we'd all dream of finding.

Hold it what was that?

Maybe it's when Alex is finally finding that Tom, Andy and, especially for her, Johnny are (or were in Tom and Andy's case) actually the same in real life . . . tick . . . as they are on the stage.

So, you get the idea. Ticks. You might want to go back and analyze why they ticked you. Usually, on re-read you wonder why you thought you had to go back to them. My advice: Don't. Don't go back to them. Just let those ticks lie.

Why? Because when you come to The End, every single one of them will fall into place in your head and you will say, Of course! She's been warning us all along! It was right there in front of us all the time.

Time, you know, is just a collection of Ticks with the occasional Tock.

Julie Morrigan is a watchmaker supreme.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Utterly Brilliant 13. Februar 2012
Von Richard Godwin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Julie Morrigan's brilliant celebration of rock, Heartbreaker, starts with a scene that takes you back to the heyday of bands like Led Zep, Bad Company, and all the myriad of greats we had. Back when. This is an insightful, compulsively readable, narrative with a roady's eye for the details that accompany a band on tour. You can smell the sweat and dope at the gigs.
The novel charts the disillusionment of Johnny Burns, who founded Heartbreaker with Tom Watson. The author captures the shift from the sixties to the commercialism of the seventies and the hardness of the eighties with an adept eye. Morrigan not only knows her music, she understands on a deep level the cultural nuances that have engineered the sounds we hear today. There is nostalgia in the novel, nostalgia for what was and what has been sold out, as the author shows the protagonist trying to come to terms with the past.
This is the stuff of crowded pubs, young men desperate to make a name, the changes beyond their control, and loss. The descriptions often contain subtle hints of what is to come, gentle touches that alert you to a change in direction as the two central characters, Burns and Watson achieve fame.
But when Alex Weston writes the band's story she uncovers betrayal and guilt. The story deepens at this point to a level of astute characterisation played off against the drama of the rise the preceded it. It is a subtle and real portrait of the things people do to achieve goals that may have lost their value on the way.
The novel reminded me of some of the events surrounding Led Zep, one of the greatest bands to have ever played. And Morrigan has taken a myth, a myth that applies to many rock bands,

and made it her own. In her tight structured prose, her razor dialogue, her observed humour and her strong evocation of what the price of fame is, she has written a story full of human drama. The title fits the novel perfectly.
I cannot recommend this highly enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another fantastic novel by Julie Morrigan 7. Dezember 2011
Von Grooydaz39 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Julie Morrigan is one of the most prolific indie writers out there. In the last year I have read two novels and two short story collections penned by Julie. The versatility and ease with which she switches between genres is enough to leave most writers green with envy.

I eagerly await each new release by Julie, as I am now a huge fan of her work. Some writers are natural storytellers and like an expert musician they make it look easier than it is. Julie is such a writer. She never wastes a word and never includes words that don't belong. Her prose flows along at a great pace but is never rushed, always measured and considered.

Heartbreaker is Julie's latest novel. I am a huge music fan so I was keen to see what Julie did with the fictional band Heartbreaker. When Alex Weston is hired to ghost write a book about lead singer Johnny Burns and his band she couldn't predict what effects this would have on her own life. The story is told from the perspective of ghost writer Alex. The story is nicely layered with flashbacks to events in the bands past. These flashbacks help us build up a picture of the band. Believability is something Julie always gets right and you find her insights about the band to be totally credible. I could just as easily be reading about Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin.

If someone else had written this it might have been quite a sedate story. However, Julie always keeps her prose interesting with humour, heart and soul - the stuff of life. With any tangled web of a band there are always secrets and you can expect the same of Heartbreaker but I'm not about to give anything away. You will just have to read this excellent book for yourselves. If you like fictional rock biographies such as Espedair Street by Iain Banks then you will surely enjoy Heartbreaker.

Another triumph for Julie Morrigan the master storyteller who deserves to be a household name. A great five star read.
