Countrymusik ist ihr die wichtigste. Trotzdem wollte Dolly in den späten 70ern ihr Image wechseln - und ihren Musikstyl. "Heartbreaker" ist bei weitem nicht mehr soviel Country, wie ihr 1977er Album "Here you come again", welches jedoch auch schon als eines der "neuen" Dolly bezeichnet. So poppig, wie "Great balls of fire" in 1979 oder "Dolly! Dolly! Dolly!" in 1980 auch nicht. Dieses Album liegt irgendwo in der Mitte. Und gerade das macht es zu etwas Besonderem. Zwischen Popsongs wie "Sure thing", tauchen in "With you gone" oder "It's too late to love me now" vertraute Instrumente der Country-Musik auf. Dolly hat es geschafft Country und Pop zu vereinen - so erfolgreich, dass "Heartbreaker" auf Platz 1 der Country-Alben kam. So erfolgreich, dass es eine Extraplatte ("Dance with Dolly") gab, auf der die Songs "Baby, I'm burnin'" und "I wanna fall in love" remixed sind - Dance-Mix. Nicht nur der Titelsong, auch "I really got the feeling" wurden No. 1 - Hits. Dieses Album hat eine nette Aufmachung, traurige, flippige Songs und eine, für Dolly damals neue, Auswahl an Instrumenten.

Dolly is my favorite singer and has been since I bought my first Dolly album, Here you come again, when I started collecting records. That was a few weeks before the release of this disappointing album and I wonder how differently things might have been had this been my first Dolly album. I don't mind that it is more pop than country - so was Here you come again - but it seems that Dolly tried just too hard to please the pop fans, forgetting about the quality of the actual songs.
There are some great tracks here. Baby I'm burning is a great slice of disco - if this can't make you get up and dance, nothing will. Nickels and dimes, perhaps the nearest Dolly gets to country on this album, is an outstanding song about when she was a struggling singer. It's too late to love me now is another great song, but other, less famous, singers (Jeanne Pruett, Charly McClain) have done better versions. The two country number ones, Heartbreaker and I really got the feeling, are OK without being great, as is The man. The other tracks are mediocre. We're through forever features Dolly's brother-in-law as a duet singer but it just doesn't work. Dolly wrote the other three (Sure thing, With you gone, I wanna fall in love) but more work on the lyrics should have been done.
Because there are some great songs here among the mediocrity, I'll give the album three stars - but it reminds us that even a brilliant singer like Dolly has off days.
