Ein sehr informatives, schönes und auch >leckeres< Buch! ;-) Allein die Informationen über den medizinischen Wert der Pflanzen ist erschöpfend gut, dann noch der kulinarische, bei dem die geübte Köchin sehr wohl heraus zu lesen ist :-) und dann folgen stets zwei Rezepte, lecker und leicht nach zu kochen, rühren, mischen, anrichten... Fein und erkennbar auch die Bebilderung, die jedem Kapitel vorangeht. Einfach Klasse dieses Buch! Vielen Dank!
PS: Das Englisch ist leicht zu lesen, und mit dem Lexikon daneben habe ich nun auch viele Herbs und Spices mit englischen Namen und Bezeichnungen kennen gelernt.

I tend to use the same herbs and spices over and over in my cooking. And I'm also looking for ways to cook in a more healthy manner. So I wanted to get a book that would help me learn more about herbs and spices, their health benefits and how to use them to improve my cooking.

I bought Healing Herbs & Spices and got so much more than I bargained for. This is a great book! For every herb or spice the author gives you the history, where it's grown, the parts of the plant that you use, other names for the herb or spice, health benefits, how it's used in cooking and then some great recipes! The health benefits are really interesting.

Cinnamon is good for arthritis, celery seed is good for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, fenugreek can help women deal with menopause and can increase male potency. Fenugreek can also help Type II diabetics lower their blood sugar. Did you know onions are an herb? I certainly didn't. I thought it was a regular veggie.

Recipes are listed for each herb and spice. The benefit is that if you find a herb or spice that you like or want to try, the recipes are right there for you. Vanilla Bean cookies, Roasted Garlic Soup, Basil Chicken. Cinnamon Maple Squash, Pizzelle Cookies (which I haven't had since I was little), Sour Cream and Chive Garlic Mashed Potatoes are just a few of the recipes I plan to try.

Finally Lee Anne Dobbins sounds like she has a passion for gardening and cooking. She writes in a very conversational manner which I like. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone interested in the health benefits of herbs & spices and how to best cook with the herbs and spices you like.

I have seen this information in many books on herbs and on spices. I haven't found many books on both, and so to the point as this book. I did like the book. However, the editing was terrible. I found so many spelling, wrong word usage, words left out, and poor grammar mistakes that I felt sorry for the author. Her editor did not do a good job. I found all the errors to be distracting from the information. If this were not a Kindle e-book, I would be correcting the book as I read it. Most word programs have spell check, word usage and grammar check, so why all the mistakes?

I prefer to use natural remedies, and some of my favorites are ginger, turmeric and oregano. I'll often take these as supplements or teas, and have been working to incorporate them more into my meals. This book is a real find, part reference and part cookbook. I like the way it's organized, featuring details and background about each ingredient followed immediately by the relevant recipes. The photos are a nice touch as well.

This was a great book, with helpful information and I loved that she included recipes with each spice/herb and its particular benefits. I will definitely be referring back to this book when I need to look up a specific herb, and I read it through the first time just for fun because it was so interesting.

However, I am not even all the way through this book yet and the grammatical and punctuation errors keep getting more frequent. There are not only missing periods at the ends of sentences, but also every time I have seen the word "it's" it has been used wrongly. There have been numerous little errors, and though it might seem little to some, it lessens the quality of the book.

Is there a chance it could just be re-edited (if it was edited in the first place)? I'd feel much bettor about recommending it to others if it were of better quality.

If you've ever walked down the spice aisle of the grocery store you're probably familiar with herbs like parsley and thyme and spices like cinnamon. But what about tumeric or fenugreek? And what exactly do you do with cilantro? Lee Dobbins new book "Healing Herbs and Spices," tells you not only how to use nearly every popular herb and spice you can imagine but also the health benefits.

Lee has an engaging style that makes you feel comfortable from the get go. She explains how the herbs and spices heal you in plain English. Each seasoning has sections about the plant itself, health benefits, side effects and culinary uses.

Did you know that basil has the laboratory-proven effect of killing bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Enterococcus? If you get bitten by a mosquito crush a basil leaf and rub it on the bite to lessen the irritation. Of course, as a cook, what I like about basil is its sweet but tangy bite of licorice. Italian food just wouldn't taste Italian without basil.

Lee's basil pesto recipe is traditional with the richness of pine nuts, the smoothness of olive oil, the saltiness of cheese and of course the herbaliciousness of basil. Try it on hot pasta, mix with an equal part vinegar for a salad dressing. Add to sour cream for a dip or spread it on slices of potatoes you then roast in a 400 degree oven.

Make Lee's recipes your own by varying some of the ingredients. For example, her recipe for lemon garlic chicken with oregano would work just as well with salmon or trout.

Some of the more unusual herbs include cardamom, lemon balm, savory and tamarind. What is tamarind you're asking yourself: it's the pulp of a tree fruit grown in Africa naturally and cultivated in other tropical regions. Healing uses include lowering the bad cholesterol LDL by binding with it so it can't be absorbed by your body. It makes a tart but refreshing drink when the paste is combined with sugar and water.

We all know that herbs and spices add zing to our cooking but who knew that those same spices could make us feel better and stay healthy. From Anise to vanilla beans, Lee covers 80 herbs and spices. It isn't often you find a book you can use in the kitchen and as part of your medicine cabinet arsenal. That's exactly what you'll find yourself doing with "Healing Herbs and Spices."
