Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the long-awaited, heavily hyped fourth instalment of a phenomenally successful series that has captured the imagination of millions of readers, young and old, across the globe. For J K Rowling the pressure is certainly on to continue to come up with thrilling, pacey storylines that allow her hero to mature into a young man without detracting from the magical secret that has made Harry into a superstar. In this book, the teenage Harry has a certain gawky charm that fits well with his advancing adolescence. Once returned to Hogwarts after his summer holiday with the dreadful Dursleys and an extraordinary outing to the Quidditch World Cup, the 14-year-old Harry and his fellow pupils are enraptured by the promise of the Triwizard Tournament: an ancient, ritualistic tournament that brings Hogwarts together with two other schools of wizardry--Durmstrang and Beauxbatons--in heated competition. But when Harry's name is pulled from the Goblet of Fire, and he is chosen to champion Hogwarts in the tournament, the trouble really begins. Still reeling from the effects of a terrifying nightmare that has left him shaken, and with the lightning-shaped scar on his head throbbing with pain (a sure sign that the evil Voldemort, Harry's sworn enemy, is close), Harry becomes at once the most popular boy in school. Yet, despite his fame, he is totally unprepared for the furore that follows.
This is a hefty volume: 636 pages, of which probably at least 200 could have been cut without detracting from the story. The weight and complexity of the book is perhaps a hint that Rowling now has her eye sharply focused on her adult audience, and the average child-reader (particularly one who is coming to Harry Potter for the first time) may well find its girth daunting. Rowling's ironic and pointed observations on tabloid journalism and the nature of media hype is just one of the references littered through the book that will tickle the grown-ups but may well fly over the heads of her young fans.
However, after a slow start, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire really starts to sparkle halfway through with Rowling's familiar magic (and yes, there is a death--sudden and tragic--and yes, Harry does start to notice girls). The crux of this story, however, is Harry's gradual coming-of-age and his handling of the increasingly determined threats to his own life.
This book is pivotal, not just for the author for whom the heat is well and truly on, but for Harry and his readers who, by the last chapter, are left in little doubt that there is much more to come. (Ages 10 to adult) --Susan Harrison

I think I'm addicted. I've waited long to get part 4 of Harry's adventures, then read it within the space of two days, and now I can't wait for the fifth one. The Goblet of Fire is darker and definitely more violent than the previous books. That's not exactly a disadvantage in my opinion, but I wonder how kids think about it. Voldemort's murders (one right in chapter 1) seem troubling enough to me, and I'm an adult.
Rowling beautifully parodies our Muggle world, starting with the Quiddich World Cup and the ever-horrible Dursleys. Then the actual plot starts: There are other wizarding schools apart from Hogwarts, and each of them sends a representative to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. Harry is chosen as the Hogwarts Champion, except that he didn't even enter, so someone with bad intentions has to be behind this. Who? He Who Must Not Be Named, of course.
As in the previous books, Rowling presents us with a twisted and changing story and lots of strange behaviour from everyone that only makes sense right at the end. The only thing I really want to complain about is the House-Elves subplot, which goes nowhere and forces us to endure Dobby's presence, which is very annoying. But apart from that, Rowling certainly has a knack for moving the story along while at the same time giving us new insights into a number of characters, such as Neville Longbottom and my absolute favourite, Snape. In this book, Snape is getting a more intriguing character than ever, and I'm hoping to hear a lot more about him in the fifth part, which is bound to be at least as dark and interesting as the fourth one.

Mit 19 Jahren gehöre ich vielleicht nicht hundertprozentig zu der Zielgruppe der Harry Potter Leser und bin deshalb auch sehr skeptisch dem ganzen Harry Potter Hype gegenübergestanden. Einen Tag bevor der Film In Deutschland anlief, habe ich das erste Buch gelesen und seit dem in kürzester Zeit alle vier.
Der vierte Band ist zweifellos der beste. Nicht nur dass er doppelt so umfangreich ist, auch die Story ist absolut genial. Ich frage mich wie Rowling es schaffen will, die nachfolgenden Bände genauso spannend zu gestalten. Jedoch möchte ich jedem raten, die Bücher in Englisch zu lesen, da die deutsche Übersetzung manchmal etwas "strange" ist. ("giggeln" Ist das ein deutsches Wort???), außerdem ist das Englisch von J.K.Rowling, abgesehen von einigen unbekannten Wörtern, nicht so schwierig und jeder der schon fünf Jahre Englisch hatte kann, meines erachtens, die Bücher auch im Original lesen.

This is by far the best Harry Potter book. As an adult, I've enjoyed reading these as much as any child. Filled with imagination, insight, and yes, riveting plot twists, the Harry Potter series is destined to be a classic. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry begins to mature into adulthood and learn the true meanings of magic, friendship, and fear. In his fourth year, Harry encounters characters whose actions in the past have affected him, his friends, and his future. In this book, Rowling deepens Harry's story revealing poignant and sometimes tragic aspects of minor characters in a way that humanizes what until now have been relatively flat characters. Without spoiling the read, it is safe to say that Harry is selected to test his mettle as a wizard in a unique and challenging contest. Behind the scenes, however, lurks an all too familiar evil that is out to kill Harry and do much worse. Parents will be pleased that this book treats the horrific and tragic happenings in a way that is sensitive and thought provoking. As Rowling's child audience matures, so Harry has grown and experienced life in such a way as to fulfill one of the goals of all literature--to inform and entertain.

Ein grosser Spass das Buch im englischen Original zu lesen.
Das Sprachniveau ist nicht so hoch, als dass man es mit einigen Jahren Schulenglisch nicht verstehen könnte.
