Just as software development is an iterative process in which an application is never truly "done," the education of a developer should continue for years. You can use Hardcore Java as a guide to the transition from novice Java programmer to journeyman, or as a map to parts of the language you haven't explored (or explored adequately) in your development work to date. "Secrets of the Java Masters" heißt es gleisnerisch auf dem Deckblatt, und der Blick ins Inhaltsverzeichnis scheint diese Behauptung auch durchaus bestätigen zu können. Tatsächlich beschäftigt sich Herr Simmons mit eigentlich allen Punkten, die man sonst so häufig in anderen sogenannten "Experten-Büchern" vermisst. Und inhaltlich muss man auch neidlos anerkennen: Hier wurden die Hausaufgaben gemacht. Durchweg gute Tipps, sinnvolle Praxis und eine gelungene Zusammenfassung von Techniken, von denen auch der eine oder andere alte Hase noch profitieren könnte.
Jetzt kommt allerdings das große ABER: Der Schreibstil ist grauenhaft. Das ganze Buch ist durchsetzt mit unlustigen und ausufernden Anekdoten, abgewechselt mit einem schier unerträglichen Dozierton.
Selten war ich so hin und hergerissen zwischen Weiterlesen und Verbannung des Buches in die hintere Ecke. Ich habe mich für Ersteres entschieden und konnte so eine Menge nützliche Sachen herausziehen... aber nur unter Quälererei.
Fazit: Inhaltlich ein Buch, das in keinem Regal eines Java-Profis fehlen sollte, stilmäßig leider eine Zumutung. Wer hartgesotten ist und darüber hinwegsehen kann: Sofort kaufen - Ansonsten: schaut lieber vorher rein...

I'm coding Java for ~1 year now and I've read (or looked into) plenty of books. But as soon as you outgrow "Hello World" and know what a for-loop does, good books are rare.
This is the first book I know, which explains advanced tools and ways how to do things, without contraining to 08/15-Patterns.
Some chapters (like the 'final') might be not too new, but I guess that depends on the reader. I liked the chapters on Proxys, Constants and Reflection most, since they tought be how to make my programmer-life easier. Create your own modules for reuse, and write the code, so that people you're working with can work with it too and can't spoil it ;-) How to make your code safe and bulletproof without losing the flexibility to add extensions.
I absolutely recommend this book for everyone who is starting to get into 'real' coding!

Ich habe mir dieses Buch für mein Studium geholt, da ich mit Java vorher eher selten was zu tun hatte, aber bereits Basiskenntnisse habe. Hardcore Java ist eher etwas für Fortgeschrittene Programmierer, die sich bereits etwas mit der Java Syntax beschäfigt haben. Auch sollte man sich vor kauf des Buches Informieren, ob es die Inhalte hat, die man erwartet.
Trotz englischer Sprache leicht verständlich, übersichtlich und konkret.
Mein nächster Kauf wird sicherlich wieder ein O'Reilly Buch sein.

Ein spitzenmäßiges Buch
Das Buch ist eines der besten, die ich je gelesen habe (und ich habe schon sehr sehr viele (Java-)Bücher gelesen). Mir persönlich gefiel auch der Schreibstil sehr gut.
