5.0 von 5 Sternen An Entirely Different Side of Oscar Wilde 12. September 2010
Von Barbara Fox - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This collection - one of thousands of worthwhile 'freebies' available for Kindle - offers a side of Oscar Wilde unknown to those who've only experienced his witty, cynical plays. These 'fairy tales' are gentle, moralistic, and only sometimes sardonic. I downloaded it in order to have my favorite of Wilde's short stories, "The Selfish Giant", which blends children's fantasy with Christian iconography in a charming, emotionally affecting way. Now I've read them all and I'm glad I have the set. This also led me to download another freebie, "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime", also recommended.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Entertaining Fairy Tales 25. Mai 2012
Von James G. Bruen Jr. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Before The Selfish Giant, which is a story included in this book, was recommended to me recently, I had forgotten that Wilde had written fairy tales. That story and The Happy Prince, which this volume reacquainted me with, are excellent. The other tales in the book are well worth reading, especially The Remarkable Rocket, a tale of a self-absorbed firework, which is very good.

These fairy tales were published before the Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray, and before Wilde became a flamboyant center of London society. Some are explicitly Christian. Wilde's wit, insight, and word play are on display, particularly in The Remarkable Rocket, which can be read as a prescient allegory of Wilde's life.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Happy Prince: Sad, but good 22. Oktober 2013
Von Sea Otter - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
If you need a good cry, this is the story to read. It is one of those so-sad-but-happy-at-the-same-time-that-I-just-want-to-sit-in-bed-and-cry, but-at-the-same-time, it-feels-good stories. Ex: A cry over the end of Marley and Me.

If you don't need a good cry, read "The Happy Prince" anyways. It is a touching emotional story.

This is by far, one of the best short stories ever. It certainly is my favorite short story of Wilde's. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Overall, the compilation of all the stories was excellent, showing Oscar Wilde's more serious side. As these stories showcase Oscar Wilde's versatility as an author, My respect for him expands greatly.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Heartbreaking Tales of Magic and Life 5. Mai 2014
Von Unruly Louise - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
These stories are beautifully written (of course!) and enchanting for little ones.

Some are more accessible than others (for example The Remarkable Rocket went a little above my five year old's head, while they could relate very well to The Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant).

The stories do raise some potentially heavy topics for children (for example death, sacrifice, God, poverty...) so I think it's good to be prepared for questions afterwards, as you might end up talking about the stories with your children long after they have finished.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Timeless and Wonderful! 7. September 2009
Von Nice Person - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
A wonderful set of fairy tales for kids or adults alike! Each tale is a gem onto itself: deep and moving, yet deeply simple at the same time. These truly are children's stories, but they're written with Wilde's trademark wit, and the solemnity that comes with age. Stories like "The Selfish Giant" and "The Nightingale and the Rose" are timeless and will forever.

The Happy Prince consists of 5 tales:

The Happy Prince: A statue of a prince asks a bird friend to deliver precious gems on his body to people who are in need in the town so that they may survive and in turn is deemed to be no longer beautiful.

The Nightingale and the Rose: A Nightingale makes the ultimate sacrifice in the form of a song so that a a boy may win the heart of a maiden.

The Selfish Giant: A grumpy giant closes his courtyard off to children so Spring refuses to come back leaving Winter to constantly blunder him. This one has a very bizarre ending in my opinion.

The Devoted Friend: A friend accepts a small favor and is expected to do entirely too much in return.

The Remarkable Rocket: A rocket (firecracker) who is quite arrogant ends up being the bottom of the bunch.

Wilde's writing was remarkable and a pleasure to read. The tone, the setting, and above all, the language is just perfect. This is definitely a collection that should be read to any child too young to play violent computer games! Beautiful stories with classic lessons.
