To me this was really an eye-opening book. It bridged the gap between my striving to be happy and my striving to be good (i.e. acting ethically) by pointing out strong links between if not identity of the two.
Happiness results from what's on your mind rather from what's in this fragile vessel called "the self". And thoughts of loving-kindness are much more prone to make you happy than thoughts of hatred or egoism. It's hard to put it in a nutshell - although it's all very simple. Matthieu Ricard changed my life by making me acquainted with buddhist philosophy and meditation practice. I highly recommend this book. Naturally, the words and perspectives this book offers will work for some, while it won't reach the hearts of others. To get a clue whether you're one of the "some" or one of the "others".
Good luck finding your way!
