HAPPINESS IS FREE is a seven week course based on the Sedona method teachings of Lester Levenson. Readers are advised to carefully follow the suggestions of the book to read slowly, practice using the new ideas, and document daily experiences in a journal in order to allow the seemingly simple lessons to take root in the unconscious. This book reminds you that you are already a joyous spiritual being who is totally loved and loving -- and that your key to happiness is to remember and fully access this truth!
The main principle described in HAPPINESS IS FREE is that true happiness comes from freeing oneself from the grips of one's ego. The bulk of the book is devoted to helping you do just that -- break free of the death-grip that your ego has on your life at this very moment. A diary of progress is included in this book, along with numerous aphorisms designed as affirmations of living a spiritual life and letting go of ego-fixations.
What I like best about HAPPINESS IS FREE is the way it describes what it feels like to live a spiritual life. I was very glad to read the experiences that Lester Levenson shares in the beginning of this book, such as the way people offered him everything he needed with great delight no matter where he went! Those who have difficulty believing that such things could happen will likely not enjoy this book as much as those who already know that such things are not only possible, but can become much more prevalent in one's life. I highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers who are committed to changing their beliefs and radically improving their lives.
If you're here, reading this, because you were drawn by a feeling of lack in your life and a deep desire to bring meaning, order, and happiness into it, then I strongly urge you to seriously consider getting this book. I don't guarantee that this book will give you all the answers you want. No book will or can do that because the answers are in you, not in any outside source.
This is a powerfully written book that can stimulate your mind so that it's receptive to your inward awareness, that is if you will let it.
However, there are many who say they are seeking happiness, but aren't willing to open themselves up for it. Others are on a path which is already enriching them. And of course there are those who block their minds against any possibility of spiritual awakening. If you fall in any of those three categories, you're less likely to gain much value. However, those on a path, even one which is fulfilling them, may well find good supplemental material here. I, for instance, was especially impressed by a discussion in the second session. Many of us have experienced a barrage of challenges shortly after we fitst start growing spiritually. I've read several explanations of why this occurs, but the discussion in this book gave me a better understanding than I previously had.
And so I give it four stars, realizing that there are many who just plain will not be receptive to the ideas here. But for those who are receptive, this is indeed a five star book.
If you do decide to read this book, be fair and give it a full chance to benefit you. The chapters are so arranged so that you can read and study one each week for a total of seven weeks. Included with each chapter or session are suggested exercises and space where you can journal your thoughts and responses to each chapter. Within these seven weeks, you will undoubtedly find that you have much more control over your life than you did at the beginning. And so, even if you eventually decide that this is not the path you wish to pursue, you will have gained through studying the book.
While this book is meant to stand on its own, there will be four subsequent volumes. Those who fully resonate with the teachings presented here have the opportunity for further study through audiotapes, seminars, and forming their own study groups.
Many of us know by now that True Self is good-Ego is not so good. This is the first book I've seen that addresses this without veering into the too abstract or too conventional. Thinking about Ego in terms of our addiction to Problem and it's flipside, Problem-Solving, was illuminating to me, and seems to hold the key for achieving the ever-illusive state of relaxation that seems to be the background problem for all of us.
Rarely does a book offer such a user-friendly "how-to," in the dismantling-the-ego-department. I wouldn't have thought it was possible, but the material shared here, from what the authors call The Sedona Method, truly operationalizes happiness. To me this is genius.
