Über den Autor
Charles Stross was born in Leeds, England in 1964. He holds degrees in pharmacy and computer science, and has worked in a variety of jobs including pharmacist, technical author, software engineer, and freelance journalist. He is now a full-time writer.

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This is propably the most entertaining, most hilarious, most ingenious and best thought out book I've read in a long time. Stross takes all the ideas, politics, technology, trends and subcultures of today's Information Society and projects them into the near future, painting a picture that I can't find a fault with.
On top of that, It is told in Stross's typical eloquent style and has a entertaining and captivating story, as well as ideas that give rise to epiphany even in the deeply immersed Programmer/Hacker/Science&Technology Geek :)
(And by the way, reading the book feels like playing a MUSH or TextAdventure)
To fully enjoy the full depth of the book however, I recommend at least a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, a healthy interest in new Technologies and their legislation for better or worse, at least one visit to the C3 and the reading of Glasshouse. ;->
Optionally you can also reread the book after consuming the above and have twice the fun :)

Set in Scotland in the near future, tremendous fun to read, satisfying conclusion, believable technology.
I have created a few memory leaks myself in the day job, but if you don't know the IT buzzwords you might have problems understanding some parts of the narrative.
The negative thing: this book is written in the second person, which is no doubt very hard to do, and is irritating to read. You have to refer to the chapter title to see whose turn it is. Mr. Stross, I will read more of your books if you stay in the third or first person.

I did read this book as a non-native speaker and I can say that it represents one of the best novels I have read for ages. As is stated by the other reviewer the setting depicts a possible near future. It takes place in a society shaped by informationtechnology and represents a mixture of a large variety of current developments and nicely includes the phenomenom of "MMORPGs".
Again as already mentioned by my fellow reviewer a certain understanding of computertech appears to be needed to fully enjoy the story.
The impact of this novel equals in my opinion that of William Gibson's pacemaking early work.
