Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Benjamin LaGrone is a web developer who lives and works in Texas. He got his start in programming at the age of 6 when he took his first computer class at The Houston Museum of Natural Science. His first program was "choose your own adventure book", written in BASIC; he has fond memories of the days when software needed you to write line numbers. Fast forward to about thirty years later; after deciding that computers are here to stay, Ben has made a career combining some of his favorite things-art and coding; creating art from code. One of his favorite projects was using the GMaps API to map pathologies to chromosomes for cancer research. Fascinated with mobile devices for a long time, Ben thinks that the Responsive Web is one of the most exciting, yet long time coming, new aspects of web development. He now works in a SAAS development shop and is the mobile and Responsive Web evangelist for the team. When he's not working on some Internet project, Ben spends his time building robots, tinkering with machines, drinking coffee, surfing, and teaching Kuk Sool martial arts.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Viele Fehler im Beispiel Code 15. Juni 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Schade drum.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Solid and well organized 1. Juli 2013
Von John Alexander - Veröffentlicht auf
I believe that this book is really more of a focus on development than design. That being said, I think that the HTML5 and CSS3 Responsive Web Design Cookbook is very solid and that it's laid out very well.

Each recipe has a three part structure;

- Getting ready, which describes any prerequisites
- How to do it..., which is the actual step by step instructions
- How it works..., an explanation of the tasks in context

I think this is a very practical way to transfer knowledge.

The first three chapters cover the basic concepts of Responsive Web Design:

Chapter 1, Responsive Elements and Media, introduces you to the creation of image and video elements that optimize to mobile devices or desktop computers.

Chapter 2, Responsive Typography, exposes you to fluid typography, illustrating different text effects, and creating text through the HTML5 canvas and CSS3.

Chapter 3, Responsive Layout, you'll begin with the building blocks of responsive layouts in an effecient manner that translates well into real world usage. By learning about using viewport and media queries, you'll focus on making your web project respond to different screen sizes and types.

Now that you have worked through the basics, the focus now shifts to using frameworks, tools, and techniques that will assist with building responsive sites.

Chapter 4, Using Responsive Frameworks, surveys several frameworks (Fluid 960 grid, Blueprint,Golden Grid, Gumby, and Bootstrap) to use responsive methods and interactions quickly and reliably.

Chapter 5, Making Mobile-first Web Applications, shows some different techniques to make mobile friendly web versions of your web application with jQuery Mobile and others.

Chapter 6, Optimizing Responsive Content, Now that you've developed your app, this chapter is about getting and using the tools to build and test your responsive web project.

Chapter 7, Unobtrusive JavaScript, teaches you how to write JavaScript in an interaction layer abstracted from your presentation layer, to enable you to build a great degree of flexibility into your web app.

All in all, I think this book can assist with building and deploying responsive sites, and will be a good reference point moving forward. A really good companion to this is Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not What I Thought 26. Januar 2014

I bought this book thinking I would get a book that taught me how to do responsive web design from the ground up. That is not what this book does. It's almost as if the author had a bunch of random notes laying around and decided to make a book out of them. For example: there is a small section that covers how to rotate your text with the canvas, which doesn't have a lot to do with creating a responsive website. The author also covers frameworks a couple of which he says are not very good and are not meant for responsive web why cover it? He does cover a few tricks on how to make parts of your website responsive, but not an entire website. The order in which the author covers the material doesn't make any sense either. And the format of the book makes it hard to follow.

I am pretty disappointed with this book, and wasted the $45.00 I spent on it. I do have other books from this publisher that are a lot better then this one.

If you have a slight background with CSS and want to learn how you can use it to do a responsive site this is a good book to use to start learning. With examples of html and css , sample pages will demonstrate many different methods to move items around the page responsively. The author also uses html5 in many examples to teach the new features that can be use to make the pages that much more robust and feature rich.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Handson responsive web design 15. Dezember 2013

With the huge market growth of tablets and smart phones, even a basic family photo site or a blog needs to be viewable not only on the desktop computer, but on tablets and smartphones as well. Companies with a large staff can devote resources to developing parallel sites, one for desktops, one for tablets and a 3rd for smartphones. The rest of us cannot justify the resources and instead have to learn to design a responsive site.

HTML5 and CSS3 Responsive Web Design Cookbook by Benjamin LaGrone belongs at the top of your list of must-have cookbooks. The recipes in this book are well laid out, each one starting with what you need then how to do it and how it works. This is a great format, as you can quickly understand the what, how and why, as well as determine if you need that specific recipe for your project at hand, The overall layout of the book (see the other reviews for details) gives you a smooth flow from being responsive design knowledge-free to a reasonable level of understanding the requirements to design a good, solid, responsive website.

In short, if CRUD with PHP OOP and MVC Design sounds like something the dog left in the front yard, then you will appreciate this cookbook as it provides a clear, logical and easy-to-follow road to developing the responsive websites for "the rest of us"
