HTML. The Definitive Guide richtet sich sowohl an Einsteiger als auch an Fortgeschrittene auf dem Gebiet des Webdesigns. HTML is a familiar FLA (four letter acronym) but what about XHTML? Is it merely a typographical error or simply XML by another name? The readable preface to this book puts us right and there is more detail in Chapter 1 which is also an interesting potted history of the web and web technologies.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is for controlling layout and specifying hypertext links for documents viewed with a browser. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) controls its standardisation. XML (Extensible Markup Language), also defined by the W3C, is a standard that allows structured data to be presented in a standard way that it can be understood by many different technologies, for example, relational database engines and web browsers. Use of XML for the exchange of data between businesses on the Internet is increasing rapidly. Now, finally, comes XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language), which is HTML reformulated to bring it into line with the XML standard.
The authors try to instil good habits and style considerations, as well as an appreciation of kumquats (a recurrent theme in the examples). They revile use of the blink tag extension that causes text to oscillate between two colour states and blink, constantly, irritatingly and advocate visiting a wide range of Web sites to learn what works and what doesn't.
The comprehensive coverage of the topic is divided into chapters like Text Basics, Formatted Lists, Forms, Frames and Executable Content. This is all you need to write HTML WITHOUT a designer. I use Active Server Pages and COM objects to generate dynamic HTML, so I rarely have the luxury of a designer like DreamWeaver or NetObjects Fusion. This book tells me exactly how to do what I want to do (even those pain in the ear <TABLE> definitions). It even tells the reader which tags are available for Netscape Only and IE Only. I would highly recommend this book.

I read the book from cover to cover with the intention of learning HTML this way, but what I found was that the reference qualities of the book made doing it this way painful. Because it is a reference, I found myself slogging through a lot of repetitiveness in various tag explanations. I could cite from memory now the section on every tag explaing the lang and dir attributes. This is critical for a reference that needs to be thorough and consistent and not assume that you've read through the entire book as I have, but makes using it as a tutorial inefficient. I read Elizabeth Castro's HTML book afterwards and found it a much better tutorial (and still a fine reference although not as thorough). Bottom line: if you want a tutorial, get Castro's book - it's a bit simplistic at times, but you'll learn what you need to know a lot faster. If you need an excellent reference, then get this book as well.

I have been using HTML: The Definitive Guide as my general HTML reference book since the first edition; it is the book I reach for when I want to check the use of some obscure tag or attribute.
That being said, this is not a good, general introduction to Web page design. Rather, the book works best as a reference for those with a solid, intermediate knowledge of HTML who want to contextualize what they know and move on to the next step.
This is a book about HTML, and it does not cover all aspects of making Web pages. Such things as DOM, DHTML and JavaScript are really beyond the scope of this book, and are covered in other, also excellent, O'Reilly publications.
If one is serious about Web design then one needs to learn HTML and code it by hand; The Definitive Guide is an excellent resource for this.
