Hard-core programmers would say that HTML is for dummies. Nonetheless, those of us who'd like to build and maintain our own Web sites but cringe at the sight of anything resembling a programming language, HTML 4 for Dummies is the hand-holding guide we need to help us through.

Given that so many HTML editors are available that do all of the site-building work for you, it's strange that the authors chose to wait until Appendix C in the back of the book to explain why you need to know HTML. Still, their reasons for learning HTML are sound and the advice they dispense is solid.

Along with going through the ins and outs of HTML tags, the authors do a fine job of explaining what design elements work and how to avoid common mistakes. The section on XHTML ensures that budding site builders have all the latest tools at their disposal.

HTML 4 for Dummies provides an introduction to Web publishing, but it contains less information than it should. If you don't know HTML at all, you'll be able to extract some worthwhile information from these pages. But if you're at all familiar with HTML and want this book to bring you up to speed on what's new in the HTML 4 specification, you'll be disappointed.

The book presents a super-simple "Hello, World" HTML document that illustrates the most basic structure of an HTML document. The authors then spend 100 pages flailing around with confusing discussions of organization and graphic design. (Sample sentence: "The Web is both a cooperative and a competitive environment; it depends on interdependence, but it's impatient with boredom.") Eventually, they get back to the information about tags that the intended audience needs--and they do a good job of explaining how to build headers, images, links, tables, and frames with HTML code. But the coverage would be better if they had included more illustrations of what the tags do. The discussion of cascading style sheets (CSS) is feeble, and there's no DHTML (dynamic HTML) code in evidence at all.

I simply expected this book to educate me about how to use HTML code. There is too much unwanted subjective advice on what makes good content for a web page. The technical explanation of HTML code is confused and poorly organized. The authors' shameless self-promotion -- using their own company's website to serve in the examples throughout the book -- undermines their integrity as writers of educational material.

After struggling with this book through the first several chapters I finally decided to logon and look for other books on the subject. I ordered one of them and I sincerely hope it won't also be a waste of time.

Just to double check my impressions of this book I checked the other reviews on this site and found one (other than mine) one-star rating and 3 (3!) five star ratings. How can this be? Am I and the guy that also thought this book was useless completely out of it? To repeat the sentiment expressed by the author of that review, Naaaah! This book is a waste of your money AND a waste of your time. It actually has negative value. By the time you've read it you will have many misconception to overcome that you didn't have before.

Wordy, Poorly Written, Poorly Organized, Little Content

There are better guides out there!

Must Buy
I learned so much from this book. However, I recommend reading Creating Web Pages for Dummies first because it really does the basics. But, this book will be great by itself.
