Über den Autor

Thomas R. Ray, III started his career with Buckley stations WDRC and WDRC-FM in Hartford, Connecticut, while a Senior in High School in 1977. He has been Chief Engineer of several stations in the Hartford area, such as WTIC AM and FM, has worked as producer/engineer for the Hartford Whalers Hockey organization, and has built numerous radio stations in the Northeast and the Caribbean. He came home to Buckley and WOR in 1997, working his way up to Vice President in 2005. He is one of the leading proponents of the HD Radio system in the United States, and has considerable experience with transmission, studio construction, and data, which culminated in the rebuilding of the WOR studio facility, which is primarily a data based facility. He converted WOR in New York City to HD Radio in 2002, and quite possibly has the most hands on experience with the hybrid AM HD Radio system in the country.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A bible for engineers performing an HD addition 25. April 2009
Von Ken - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
A contemporary, step-by-step 'instruction' manual for engineers performing the addition of HD AM or FM facilities to a broadcast station.

The book is priced probably higher than it should be, but it is a good product, and will probably save you the cost of the time it saves.

Let me begin with a disclaimer; I've known Tom for many years having worked in the Hartford market together in the past. Now, on with it. There are two books available in the US detailing HD Radio systems (that I know of); Tom Ray's book and The IBOC Handbook by Dave Maxson (with whom I'm also acquainted.) Both books are excellent, but very different. Ray's "Implementation" book is a guide to setting up both AM and FM HD transmission equipment written from a personal standpoint. It's like you're going through the process under the tutelage of a very experienced hand. Ray covers the subject from the station engineer's perspective in discussing changes that might be made to existing studio equipment, the studio to transmitter link, audio processing, and the HD Radio hardware and software itself. It's truly a field guide. Maxson's book is more for the experienced engineer, with a top down discussion of the history of the development of the IBOC Standard, a very in-depth analysis on the protocol stack (i.e. the physical layer) and every component that makes up the encoding and decoding. Maxson then goes on, like Ray, to discuss the more tangible components of transmission such as IBOC/FM combining schemes, antenna systems, etc. A station engineer lacking formal training in digital technology and seeking more of the nuts and bolts source would be very well served to begin with Ray's field guide to facility conversion. Both books are very well illustrated with diagrams and photographs. Combine the two and you have an excellent HD Radio library that covers every aspect of the technology.
