Synopsis
This title offers a lavishly-illustrated insight into a virtually untouched ecological gold-mine. Located in northern South America, Guyana is the continent's only English-speaking nation. It occupies an area of 83,000 square miles (a little smaller than the UK) and, although physically part of South America, is culturally more Caribbean than Latin American. Guyana's range of ecosystems and landscapes includes four mountain ranges, nearly three hundred waterfalls (the most notable being Kaieteur Falls), eighteen lakes, vast areas of tropical rainforest and sprawling savannahs. It is home to more than seven hundred species of birds, a wide variety of mammals, reptiles and insects, and an abundance of distinctively large plants and trees. Geographically, Guyana is part of the 'Guiana Shield' which, together with the adjacent Amazon Basin, forms the largest equatorial forest in the world. Lavishly illustrated with over 400 photographic images and accompanying editorial, "Guyana" is a spectacular insight into a little-known corner of the Commonwealth. It reflects the many aspects of life in this vibrant nation, and provides a window to the many unexplored treasures of 'El Dorado'.
