Incredible Story of Survival for Children! 24. November 2007
Von Reba J. Hoffman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This is a beautifully written childrens' book that would help any child facing tragedy. Murray has brought the human spirit alive in a cat. When I read it, I could not help but picture children nestled around a story book reader in a Red Cross shelter somewhere. It is a message of hope and endurance.

This book would also be terrific in preparation for an expected natural occurrance such as a hurricane. Simply amazing!

If your children are not facing some sort of disaster, Gullah is still a wonderful and fun read. Great story!

I highly recommend this book.

Hope After Disaster 12. November 2007
Von Linda A. Pfister - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The author kindly sent me a copy of this book and asked for an honest review.

I liked this book very much. It is a sweet tale of two new friends from different parts of town who were thrown together by mother nature. They manage to survive a difficult time by finding a common thread, their love of music. In that way, they are like most of us from New Orleans. We are resilient and can always find a way to "pass a good time."

Everyone that I showed this book to stated how awesome the folk art was. I particularly love one plate where the two friends are singing to the top of their lungs on the rooftop. One mom, however, stated that there were "too many words" on each page for the youngest of her children. I also wonder where the name "Gullah" came from. Certainly, there are many pet names more closely associated with the Creole or Cajun cultures that would have struck a chord, so to speak, with local children.

Overall, this is a good story with many positive messages - survival, overcoming adversity, listening to your parents, and making new friends. It puts a very scary event into a context that gives hope for a fresh start.

Good book for young readers 26. August 2007
Von Robyn Gioia - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Reviewer, Robyn Gioia

Gullah the cat had no idea what kind of havoc a hurricane could bring. In fact, he didn't even listen when his mother warned him the family was leaving and the cats would be left behind in the house. And mother specifically said don't go out that night. But go out he did, straight to Pirate's Alley.

"The little cat hadn't gone very far before he sensed something was not quite right. No Music. There was no music in New Orleans. No jazz, nobody singin' the blues. Now, that was strange. There was always music in New Orleans and Gullah loved to sing along."

That was when things started happening. The rain came down in sheets, the wind roared in anger, and things started flying up off the ground. Katrina in her full force was upon them. From there, Gullah experiences the hopelessness of a devastating storm and the ray of light that comes with hope. The story telling is expressive and engaging and will easily interest young children. Full page, full color, eye-catching, kid-friendly paintings add to Gullah's heart warming journey. The artist, having experienced Katrina first hand, drew all sixteen illustrations from inside a FEMA travel trailer. Author, Nancy Murray is to be commended for taking such a tragic episode in American history and presenting it in a gentle but meaningful way for young readers.
