Kurzbeschreibung

22. Mai 2014
Laurence Juber shares his life with Wings and his solo career 'on six strings' in new book. Guitar With Wings: LJ's Musical Journey on Six Strings, a photo memoir by Grammy Award-winning artist Laurence Juber. It is the story of Juber's five-decade career told through his own words, candid never-seen-before colour and black & white photos, vintage advertising materials, guitars, equipment, memorabilia and the six-string legend's encyclopaedic musical memory. "In the thirty-something years since Wings folded I would look at the boxes of photographs and accumulated memorabilia, promising myself that one day I'd take the time to organize it all," "Contrary to my expectations that the Wings era would be absorbed into the general arc of Paul McCartney's career, interest in the band itself has continued to flourish and I recognized that I had a unique perspective to offer." Juber said the 50-year anniversary of his love affair with the guitar and the public's on-going fascination for Wings proved a catalyst for this retrospective. "The photos triggered long-forgotten memories of my time in the band, underscoring how my studies at 'McCartney University' were a bridge from my early musical experiences to my later 'solo flight' and how much the couple-consciousness of Paul and Linda McCartney proved to be a template for my own romantic and creative relationship with my wife Hope,"

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Marshall Terrill is a veteran reporter for The Chandler (Ariz.) Connection and is the author of 10 books, including the best-selling Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel. He co-authored Maravich, a biography on the life of basketball legend Pistol Pete Maravich with Wayne Federman in 2006. His book Elvis: Still Taking Care of Business was written with Elvis Presley bodyguard Sonny West and was published in 2007. Terrill resides in Tempe, Arizona with wife, Zoe.Inspired by the wave of Beatlemania that swept the UK in 1963, Laurence Juber develped a passion for the guitar and the ambition to make a career playing it. He studied at London's Goldsmith College of Music and performed with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Becoming one of London's top studio guitarists, his playing was featured on the soundtrack of The Spy who Loved Me, as well as recordings by The Alan Parsons Project, Cerrone, Sarah Brightman, Rosemary Clooney, Charles Azanvour Lucio Battiste and Colin Blunstone, among many others. In 1978, Juber was plucked from the studio world by Paul McCartney who asked him to play lead guitar in what was to become the final incarnation of Paul's post-Beatles group, Wings. He recorded and toured with the band for three years, during which time they won a Grammy, and scored numerous chart hits. When Wings folded in 1981, Juber relocated to the USA and settled in Los Angeles. Since then he has become one of Hollywood's most in-demand studio players and has gained world-wide recognition as a virtuoso concert performer, recording artist and composer. Juber, known to his fans as LJ, has released 22 solo albums. LJ Plays The Beatles, was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine's all-time Top Ten albums. Juber's solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy. His latest album, Under an Indigo Sky (Solid Air Records) is a jazz/blues tinged studio album that was mixed at Hollywood's legendary Capitol Studios by top jazz recording engineer Al Schmitt and first released only on vinyl.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Attending "McCartney University" with one of the world's great guitarists 30. Juni 2014
Von Jennifer Martin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
When Laurence Juber was invited to join the last incarnation of Paul McCartney's post-Beatles band Wings, he bought a camera. We should all be very glad that that he had the foresight to do that. This handsome volume brings us an intimate peek into the life of a band, and the individuals who made a very important contribution to the history of rock music.
I confess that until fairly recently, I didn't know much of the music of Wings from the years that LJ was part of the band. I have been a Beatles fan since Ed Sullivan, and I knew and liked the Band on the Run album, and from LJ's time, I liked Back to the Egg and knew it to be an important, award winning record. But I know Laurence Juber as the state-of-the-art solo finger style acoustic guitarist that he is. I've heard Laurence play dozens of times. My respect of him comes from that oeuvre, and his ability to teach it. So, while I know that he played with Paul and Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, and Steve Holley in Wings, whenever I see LJ, that's not my frame of reference for him. However, after reading this new treasure of a book, I have a brand new appreciation of the life and work of one of the world's most creative people. You'll read of (and see) Laurence's early life in London, as a session player there, on through his time with Wings, learning from the man who is arguably the greatest creative force in mid-to-late 20th century popular music, and to his present work as Los Angeles session musician and solo artist and composer. You'll even learn what LJ himself considers to be his most important attribute as a guitarist. The photographs, which sat for years in shoe boxes until he undertook this project, are priceless. They are intimate views into the life and creative process of Paul McCartney, Linda, Denny, Steve, and Laurence.
The book is worthy of living in a prominent spot in your home, where you can pick it up often. I browse through it while listening to one of LJ's great solo recordings, and now, while listening to his contribution to Wings.

What a beautiful book ......... You can feel one year and a half of WINGS creation . My favorite part is the summer 1978 scotland section. Any McCartney WINGS fan will love this book. But people who like photographs who fix a moment of music history will love too. And it's so nice to know more about Laurence Juber's beginning and his first meeting with his wife .This is a must. I'm waiting now with a volume 2 .......

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Memoir as Classy as the Man and His Music 28. Juni 2014
Von Scott Uzzel - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Having had the privilege of meeting Laurence Juber in Las Vegas last October, my son and I were thrilled to hear he was touring through our area in May. It was the most amazing acoustic guitar performance either of us had ever seen. His solo cover of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" was mind-blowing! After the show, we purchased a copy of "Guitar With Wings." It truly is a festival of rare photos of Mr. Juber's years with Paul McCartney and Wings. As fascinating as the background material on his time with Wings is, after having witnessed his virtuoso talent in person, I was even more interested in reading about Mr. Juber's amazing amount of session work and his many solo accomplishments. The graciousness that marks his interaction with his fans comes through in his writing, as well. Laurence Juber is a class act, both on and off stage. His book, like his performances, gives his fans more than their money's worth. If you are a fan of Laurence Juber, Denny Laine (of both Wings and The Moody Blues), or (of course) Paul McCartney, this beautifully produced book and its bonus CD will not disappoint.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding book! 13. Juli 2014

This book is a real must for any McCartney, Wings or Juber fan. The volume is well-written, full of incredible photographs and tells interesting stories about the recording of many songs appeared on BACK TO THE EGG. Juber and Terrill have built a fantastic book, and the tone of narration is always simple. Juber is an oustanding musician and humble person. I also loved the stories of Juber's career from other periods than Wings and his personal journey through life and love. Don't miss it.

Laurence Juber and Marshall Terrill take readers back to the late 70's gorgeous never before seen photographs from the final days of Wings. This is more than a memoir, it's a time capsule. To date, Laurence is the only Wing member to write his memoirs and in doing so he gives us a revealing look at Wings swan song.
